Subject: Re: Question on serving as a soldier #galicia

Brown-Grant, Angus (angu) <angu@...>

My Grandmother's two brothers, who were born in Vienna, both served in the
Austrian army during WW1. The older brother was an officer in the cavalry,
and served in Albania. He was awarded many campaign medals, all of which are
still in our family's possession.

Lilian's question raises a new question. I know that Jews served
in the Polish Army - my gfather did. I know they were conscripted
to the Russian army. Were they ever requested to serve in the
Austro-Hungarian army??? "

Re: Castle Garden? #ukraine

Roman Vilner <roman.vilner@...>

Mark,
he could have been talking about the processing facility, but called it
"castle garden" based, possibly, on the idea that all immigrants had to go
through it. In other words, he may have thought that the words "castle
garden" actually stand for, or rather paraphrase, the words "processing
facility".

What surprises me though in this excerpt, is that the words >from the tale
are in Russian, rather than Yiddish. My understanding was that Jews, while
knowing Russian as an official language, preferred to communicate between
themselves in Yiddish, so it sounds strange to me that your ancestor wrote
his memoir in Russian, especially quoting the words >from the Russian folk
tales.

I am in possession of a long and detailed memoir written by my
grandfather, chronicling day-by-day, even minute by minute, his
trip >from the Ukraine to Chcago in 1913.

He landed in Quebec City, and took the train to Chicago. Here
is a piece of what he writes:
snip<
On Sunday at 3 PM we arrived in Quebec. They took

the 3rd class passengers to Castle Garden, but we

privileged 2nd class passengers were let off immediately.

My question is this: was there a facility called Castle Garden
in Quebec? Or had 'Castle Garden' (it's spelled in Cyrillic in the
original) become the generic name for a receiving facility for
immigrants? Or had my grandfather simply heard of Castle
Garden, and thought it was in Quebec?
snip<
Anyone have any ideas?

My own impression is that records in subordinate towns is not an
unambiguous matter. For instance it seems that Skalat's death
records include those for Kozowka, but there is nary a Kozowka birth
record in Skalat. (Supposedly they are in Miklunice.)

Similarly, there are some Grimaylow records in Skalat, but other
Grimaylow births are not there and I don't know where they are.

In Rozdol, there are birth records >from Mikolayev, but not >from
Brezdowice - despite the fact that Brezdowice in between Rozdol and
Mikolayev.

JOWBR Launch #poland

Hurry and get on the launch!

The JEWISHGEN ONLINE WORLDWIDE BURIAL REGISTRY is projecting its
searchable database to be online in mid to late July 2001. You are
encouraged to submit your burial data now to this exciting program.

The JOWBR will be in a searchable database on JewishGen and the data
will also be incorporated into the relevant "All Country" databases.
Available photographs of the tombstones can also be submitted with
the data. The appearance of the database will be similar to that of
the Bristol cemeteries database at
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/bristol.htm.

We know that many of you who have contacted us are busy this Spring
collecting data and many of you are traveling to your ancestral homes
this summer to survey the local cemeteries. Your data may not,
therefore, be available for the initial launch. But we are asking
those of you who have already collected your data to submit it to us
no later than June 15 for the initial launch. We will be doing
quarterly updates thereafter, with submission dates in 2001 being
September 15 for inclusion in the Fall Update and December 15 for the
Winter Update. So those of you who are collecting data this Summer
will still be able to get your work into the JOWBR in 2001. This
project will be ongoing for many years and we are expecting to do
quarterly updates for a long time.

It will be helpful if you input your data into our template, which
can be found at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/, being
especially careful to follow instructions for the date fields. The
instructions are at
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/JOWBRinstructions.htm.
Also, a reminder that donor agreements be submitted with the data.
Mail donor agreements to Harriet Brown, Administrative Coordinator,
and data as email attachments to Ernie Fine, Technical Coordinator.

Without the help of Harriet Brown, Ernie Fine, Warren Blatt, and
Michael Tobias, none of this would be possible. My heartfelt thanks
to them and to the countless others who have collected and are
collecting burial data and donating the results of their hard work to
JewishGen where it will be freely accessible to all researchers.

The MARCUS in my family is as such:

Sam Saffian (b 1893 Makow Poland) married Bella Marcus (b. Dec 1900, d.
May 1987 in Los Angeles CA). I am told that Bella was a cousin of the
same Marcus of Neiman-Marcus.

Sam and Bella had three children, Morris Ray Allen, Robert and Saul.

Saffian could well have changed to Safian in that family.

If these people ring a bell, do email me!

Castle Garden Immigration Records #belarus

theentins <theentins@...>

There have been many posts on the various SIG's and digests concerning the
existence (or destruction by fire) of the Castle Garden immigration records.
(See JewishGen digest archives.)

I know that NARA and the LDS have the New York passenger arrivals during the
Castle Garden priod (to 1892) on microfilm.

What I am led to believe was that if any records were destroyed, it was
indexes. As we know there is no New York passenger ship index for 1848-1892.

Since Ellis Island records were recently made available rather quickly over
the past few years, the the same could be done (especially if they were
digitized) with the Castle Garden records.

Does anyone know the true facts of the Castle Garden fire?

Does anyone know of any plan to index the New York passenger ship records?

I, too, had been searching for my father's ship manifest based on the
information he provided on naturalaization documents. Because of the EI
database, I now know that he listed his date of emigration as his date
of arrival. Hope this helps.
