Castle Garden #ukraine

Dear Moderator,

I've had a number of requests for more information about my Castle Garden post
last night. If you think it appropriate, you might share this post with the
rest of the group.

The New York Arrival records are available at a number of NARA regional sites
(list follows--try www.nara.gov for more info) plus, I believe, the Mormon
Family History centers.
NARA Washington DC
NARA Central Plains Region (Kansas City, MO)
NARA Great Lakes Region (Chicago, IL)
NARA Northeast Region (New York City, NY)
NARA Northeast Region (Pittsfield, MA)
NARA Pacific Alaska Region (Anchorage, AK)
NARA Pacific Alaska Region (Seattle, WA)
NARA Pacific Region (Laguna Niguel, CA)
NARA Pacific Region (San Francisco, CA)
NARA Rocky Mountain Region (Denver, CO)
NARA Southeast Region (Atlanta, GA)
NARA Region (Ft. Worth, TX)

Unfortunately, there is no index to NY passenger arrivals >from 1846 to 1897.
So if you don't know when they came, you have to wade through a lot of
microfilm.

One possibility is trying the books Russians (or Germans or Italians, etc.)
to America. If you can find your people there, you may have enough
information to find them in the manifests.
But that exercise may not be worth the efort...

I can't generalize, because I didn't see enough manifests to do so. But I
saw a lot of records >from 1889 and there was very little personal
information. I don't recall seeing towns of origin, but there was usually a
nationality column. In many cases, there were no first names
(e.g., Mr. H. Smith and wife). The funny thing was that many
manifests listed the number of bags each passenger had.
I'm sorry my experience doesn't suggest more to hope for.
I'm no expert--just sharing my experience.

Good luck,

Seth Orloff

Arlene Beare <arl@...>

No man is an Island,entire of itself;
every man is a piece of the Continent,a part of the main;
if a clod be washed away by the sea,Europe is the less,
as well as if a promontory were,as well as if a manor of thy friends or of
thine own were;
any man's death diminishes me,because I am involved in Mankind;
and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.

They were kind enough to share their photos with me, which have now
been posted to the Radauti ShtetLinks web site (address below).
