I am not computer literate, but it is possible to copy the documents
several times in different degrees of dark to light. Perhaps, if you get
the page lighter, it would be more possible to read. Good luck

RUBIN FAMILY FROM VIENNA #hungary

bob rubin <bob_rubin@...>

Hello,

My name is Robert Rubin. I am trying to obtain more information on my great
grandfather and his family.

I know very little about my great grandfather as he had separated >from my
great grandmother almost a century ago. His name was Hirsh (Harry) RUBIN. He
arrived in the United States on March 15, 1891. All of the documents that I
was able to obtain (2 United States census records, my grandfather´s birth
certificate, and my great aunt´s death certificate) all indicate that Hirsh
RUBIN was >from Austria. His United States Naturalization Record states that
he was born on November 12, 1861. The census records confirm that he was
born around 1861. My grandfather´s wife said to me (20 years ago) that he
was >from Vienna. I do not know if that meant that he was born in Vienna or
had lived there prior to moving to the United States. Or perhaps, Hirsh had
always told people that he was >from Vienna because it was a well-known city,
and he actually may have lived close to Vienna. He married my great
grandmother, Katherine SILBERMAN, who was >from Izyaslav, Volynhia, Ukraine.
They probably met and married in New York as she had arrived in the United
States in 1892, and their first born child was in 1900. They had 3 children:
Hyman, Betty, and Samuel. Initially, they lived in New York City, and then
they moved to Boston.

Any help or suggestions in finding out more information on my family would
be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Dear Fred,
The Theresienstadt Memorial Book confirms the information you have about
Markus, in addition there is an entry for Elise and Therese FRIEDBERGER
(sisters or wife?), all three were deported with transport XIII/1 from
Stuttgart to Theresienstadt, arrival date there is 23 Aug 1942:

Markus, born 21 Sep 1863, died in Theresienstadt on 12 Sep 1942
Elise, born 02 May 1876, deported to Auschwitz with transport Ea on 16
May 1944
Therese, born 05 Oct 1864, died in Theresienstadt on 28 Aug 1942

(Just in case you have not had these details before.) With kind regards,

Galician Birth Records #galicia

HJB <hjb@...>

I have some questions regarding interpretation of Galician Birth
records in chart form. If one finds a birth to parents where the
given names as well as surnames are the same as other
registrations, and the house number is the same, could one assume
that both births are in the same family unit?

If another family having the same surname has the same house
number, can one assume that both families are related?

I've found some births to my Haber line on JRI-Poland and some of
my dear cousins can't be convinced that they belong to our
family. I hope that I've been clear enough for a response.
Thanks in advance for your efforts.

What was "Gielda"? #warsaw #poland

George Mason <gmason3815@...>

I have an old postcard of a building in Warsaw. It looks like a bank-like
structure, constructed in a Romansque style of architecture. The postcard
describes the building as "Gielda". Can anyone tell me what this means? Is
it a guild hall, a bank or something else?
Thank you,

You first need to know that the house number recorded in a
birth record
is the actual place of birth. This could be the house of a
relative, the
house of the midwife, a hospital or a clinic.
I'm working under the assumption that Zurow, Galicia was a very
small Shtetl. Would there have been a hospital or clinic in a
Shtetl that small? You're right that it could be the house of a
relative or midwife, but I thought that midwives would attend at
the house of the expectant mother. Perhaps the custom there and
at that time was otherwise?

I think that many house numbers included multiple units
(apartments)
in that building.
These records are >from the late 1800s. Would there have been
apartment buildings in a small shtetl in that time period?
