Paktu Krow #poland

Jacob D. Goldstein <jake@...>

Fellow genners,

In an 1827 marriage record >from Siennica, both the groom's family and
the bride's family are described as earning a living >from "Paktu
Krow." The groom's family is said to be "we wsi Wola Sufczynska
zamieszkalych z Paktu Krow utrzymuianjch," and the father of the bride
is also "z Paktu Krow utrzymuiancego." He and his family resided nearby,
in Lasomin.

Does anyone know what "Paktu Krow" might mean? Could it have been the
name of an enterprise? A social program?

Siennica, Wola Sufczynska, and Lasomin are about 40 km ESE of Warszawa.

I will very much appreciate any pointers you can give me.

DUDOCK who were they and where from #poland

By _OMaR_

For several years now, I have been trying to trace my
great grand parents. Supposedly they came >from the
town (shtetl?) of Chechanowtze (Chechanowietz,
Chechanovtze) in Russian-Poland, about 1867, astride
the twin provinces of Grodno and Lomze, by the Narev
river.

I have never been able to find a town of that name and
neither have I ever located their name ( DUDOCK)
anywhere in Poland. Nor does it sound Polish. The only
place I have ever seen it was in Holland, but I've
found no connection. I also cannot find them here in
the US and am not sure if they arrived with their
family or if the cildren arrived without them.
Has anyone ever heard of that name or the town?
There are some DUDoCKS ( a few) in the US but they
don't seem to be connected to me either.
Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Calling all families with Polish surnames #general

Alice Josephs

Genealogist Ceil JENSEN is setting up a freely-accessibly Polish
surname changes webpage on http://mipolonia.net

A sample webpage for the surname changes is at
http://mipolonia.net/surname_finding_aid.htm

Ceil asks anybody who has families who either changed surname spelling
or made a more radical name change to submit the original name, the
permutations and/or radical change of name, ("Aliases, Adulterations
and Anglicizatons"), place of origin and date of emigration for
inclusion on the page. The email address is available on the homepage
of the website (scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on
Ceil's name). Ceil is not including email addresses in the surname
finder because of spamming concerns.

This sounds like a potentially truly excellent resource.

norfolk passenger lists? #general

Dubin, David M. MD

Hi everyone,

After an outpouring of helpful info to my last request, please let me try
another.
I am looking for information on Harry SANDLER who died in Norfolk, Virginia
in April 1923. His death certificate mentions his being in the US for 2
years & one month (so he arrived about March 1921). That's all I have. I do
know he joined a large contingent of his family in Norfolk and suspect
that's where he sailed.
The Ellis Island search (using H. SANDLER with soundex on Steven Morse's
site) was negative.

I'd like to know if Jews arrived elsewhere on the East Coast, if there are
lists of such arrivals & how one goes about searching.
Thanks again.
