VM 6912 and 6913 #general

Many thanks to those who have provided the identification of the language
and translation for viewmate 6912.

Please take a look at viewmate 6913 to see the front of the picture.

Do you think the author of the notes on the back meant that
1) the older children were Rachel's and the younger ones, both girls were
Ephraim's
OR
2) that the children on the left side of the picture were Ephraim's and the
children on the right side of the picture were Rachel's?

We may never know, but I'd like some educated guesses.

Thanks again,
Susi Godfrey

Black Bread Disease ? What is this? #general

David Sencer

Ergot poisoning.

Ergot is a fungus that attacks grains, particularly rye. It produces at
toxin, a mycotoxin which can cause itching, diarrhea, gangrene,
convulsions and hysteria. It has been postulated that it was one of
plagues in Exodus. The last outbreak was in the 1920's in Russia. The
use of herbicides in farming has eliminated it as a major problem.

Black bread disease #general

Barbara Zimmer <bravo.zulu@...>

Black bread disease probably refers to what is also known as "St.
Anthony's fire" --- a ailment due to to consuming the fungus ergot
which grows on rye grain. (The hallucinogen LSD is a member of the
ergot family.)
Symptoms of St. Anthony's fire included " hallucinations, panic,
convulsions, and painful burning in their limbs that followed a loss
of circulation in constricted blood vessels. " [>from an article on
using ergot to treat migraine headaches.]

Howie Axelrod asked:
My Grandfather >from Russia / Poland is alleged to have died from
"Black Bread Disease". It is apparently a Europeon term. Anyone have
any idea as to what this is?

Seeking VM6914/5:Unknown ENGELSON or Ozer MILLER-Kefar Saba, Israel in 1964 #general

Joan Engel

Attention Israel-based Genners: I am looking for Ozer MILLER or his
descendants. Ozer and his wife lived in Kefar Saba, Israel in 1964 or

believe she was a telephone operator in 1964 or 1969. Mrs. Miller
(nee Engelson) is related to my paternal ggm, Neche ENGELSON, who
lived in Vilna.

I have placed a photo of the MILLER's (a very good looking couple) on
Viewmate along with the Yiddish note (and translation) on the back of
the photo.

Please go http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/toview.html and select
the to view option to see VM 6914 and VM 6915.

Please reply directly to me at my email address below. Thank you.
