Do you have a Napoleon 1812 story?

Roots-Key, the journal of JGSLA is collecting information about the
Napoleon's Russian Campaign of 1812. We hope to be able to plot the
route >from Kovno to Moscow with your stories. Napoleon's army covered
a broad front stretched north and south through Kovno, Vilna, Svensionys,
Vitebsk, Mogilev and Minsk, bordered by the Pripet Marshes on the south,
crossing the Nieman, the Dneiper, and the Berezino Rivers. . .with major
battles in Smolensk, Borisov and Borodino. Every village and villager
was affected. Construction, demolition, pillage, disease and death
threatened every shtetl and town in his path.

If you have a story, no matter how insignificant or obscure it sounds,
we would like to hear it. If you would like to participate in this JGSLA
project, please contact us privately.

Help with Translating Russian record from Ciechanow #poland

gerischlen@...

In researching the LDS records, I came across this entry.
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/index.asp

It is record VM7662. It is a church record for Peplowska.
That was my grandmother's maiden name. Records in Poland during that
time period (late 1800's) were written in Russian so I need assistance
in translating the bottom half about Sofia (?) Peplowska.

Thank you for any help.

Just to let you know the JRI-Poland database has
Birth, marriage and death records indexed for Seirejai.

Should you find any connection of your family to Mordesowitz
(spelling varies), let me know as I have family >from there.

My ggm's 1866 birth registration >from JRI Poland lists the place of
registration as Sereje in Suwalki gubernia/Bialystock Province located at
54 14 23 49. The town looks like Stroczma or Streczma according to the
translation I was provided.

The only shetl name that looks even similar is Straciumai. Can anyone
help me out here?

LITHUANIAN ARCHIVES - VILKAVISKIS #lithuania

In response to the question about obtaining information about my family
name I have to say that Galina Baranova, the head archivist at the state
archives listed below responded to my request for information.
She had done a search for someone else with my surname and had only found
listings of names apparently >from a listing of street addresses. It did
not go back and I was looking for information >from the 1800s.

Contact information:

Galina wrote that they were currently working with requests >from January
2005 so it is a slow process.

Lithuanian State Historical Archives
(Lietuvos Valstybes Istorijos Archyvas)
Gerosios Vilties 10
2009 Vilnius, Lithuania
The initial payment for the search is 400 Litas. 2.1 Litas = 1 USD OR
3.45 LITAS = 1 EU which in the converted form can be sent by check
directly to the archive.

Or transfer the money for the name of Lithuanian State Historical
Archives to the account #LT 617 3000 10035324224 in the Lithuanian
Savings Bank (HANSA-LTB), Vilnius SWIFT:HABA LT 22. This is taken
directly >from a letter I received >from the archives on March 7, 2006.
After the search you can order copies or archival certificates. They
will notify you of the charges.

There is an excellent article on line by Joseph Rosin about Vilkaviskis.
It might answer some of your questions. You can find it at URL

Lomes of Skidel #lithuania

nina bunin <nina.marie@...>

Please excuse the confusion of a newbie. Is Skidel in the Grodno
Gubernyia in this SIG or in Belarus? My grandfather (born 1893 in
Bialystok) considered himself a Litvak.

Help?

Nina Bunin
Arlington, VA

MODERATOR'S NOTE: Skidel is in today's Belarus and in the area
covered by the Belarus SIG. However, "Litvak-land" -- the area
in which people considered themselves Litvaks -- was broader than
the boundaries of the country of Lithuania.

Katino/Katina/Katinas family in Lithuania + Linkuva/Laukuva #lithuania

I'm researching traces of any Katino/Katina family in Lithuania. I have
found the names of Shoah victims named KATINAS >from Laukuva/linkuva;
Lithuania.Here are my questions :
Could someone confirm that Laukuva and Linkuva is really the same town? >>

Laukuva (55 37/ 22 14) is 75.1 miles (120.8 km) SW of Linkuva (56 05/ 23
59).

<< is it certain that KATINAS and KATINA are two versions of a same

I think you can safely assume that KATINAS and KATINA are the same
surname.

HART - emigrated US to Netherlands #general

Irene Newhouse <einew@...>

Some of my relatives, Andrew (Andries Hartog) HART, his wife Sarah nee
ROSENBAUM and their daughter Johanna left the US for the Netherlands some
time after the 1910 census. They all died in the Holocaust, and the family
is listed on the Dutch Holocaust Memorial website. I'd like to know how to
find out when the moved back to the Netherlands - Andrew HART was born in
Groningen, his wife in Germany & their daughter in Boston.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Census deciphering #general

Aaron M Fink <aaronfink@...>

Hi All:
I need help deciphering a 1900 census, please:
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=7665
On line 83:
1. There is something written on top of the first name I cannot figure out.
It seems like an "x" over something else.
2. Under the "citizenship", "naturalization" question, it looks like there
is an "al". Does anyone know what that means?
3. I cannot make out his profession. If this is who I am looking for, it
possibly should say "butcher". Also, there is something written on top of
his profession that I also cannot make out.
4. The head of the house (same line-83) should be Joseph (Josef?), however
it does not look like that is what is scribbled. All of the other data
(dates, wife, children, etc) match up. Can anyone make heads or tails or
his first name...can anyone see how it could say Joseph? Joseph's middle
name is Isaac, which is what it looks like is written.

Please respond privately: aaronfink@ycgonline.com

Thank you very much.

Have a great day!
