I am a cousin of Elizabeth Jackson, also a subscriber of Warsaw SIG.

She posted a message in early 2004 re family who lived at Karmelicka
15 in Warsaw, and has not received replies since.

I am trying to help my cousin; we don't know how to find out further
information re the owner(s) of this property, who as far as Elizabeth
knows, were related to her family.

I recently looked at
http://www.kalter.org/search.php?PHPSESSID=d8767443ec72bce102f6ea2c576671

Karmelicka 15.

I received a number of results.

Does this mean that this was an apartment building and the results are
names of its residents?

If this is so, would descendants of these residents know about their
neighbors? their landlord(s)?

I'm hopeful that they would and would really appreciate hearing >from

I have a record >from Germany which indicates that as

anyone know how I could find who owned this property

I am doing genealogy research on my family.
It seems that my maternal grandmother may have come >from a town
referred to in the Ellis Island database as Devardesin.
The database also refers to it as being Warsaw.
In looking at the information on Jewish Gen
I can find no information on Devardesin
( I am probably not spelling it correctly).
Can anyone tell me where Devardesin is.
Is is a part of Warsaw. or a suburb or what?
Is there any information on people who may have lived there.
My grandmother came to America approximately in 1910.
She always said she was >from Warsaw.
Any information that I can receive would be greatly appreciated.

Finding information on Jews in German towns and villages #germany

Duccio Leoni England member 217885 <duccio.leoni@...> Asked:

"....> Does anyone know how to go about to find:
1) How long the families have been in Ebelsbach? 2) what was their
business?
3) is there any archives available to search as more than likely the
registration of births, deaths and marriages would not be recorded yet
centrally? 4) Was there a synagogue and is it still there?
==G search Ebelsbach. You will find online much information about most German
towns and villages, especially the history of their Jews.

==Then write the Herr Burgermeister, the Stadtarchivist, and anyone in the
town who may have information (the Catholic priest, the Evang. pastor, the town
historian, the chamber of commerce, high school principal, etc. )

==Offer to send them the information you are gathering. The town fathers are
usually very keen to establish as full a record as possible of their former
Jewish fellow citizens, and are generally very cooperative.

==There are often published history of the Jewish communities, and you can
often establish contact thrrough them with university researchers into the
Jewish community.

==You can write in English, appending a little apology. Most Germans read
English quite well. Incidentally, you should refer to the Jewish community as
Die Israelitische Kultusgemeinde if you write in German.

On the subject of the internment of enemy aliens on the Isle of Man,
it may be of interest that I was a Special Wireless Operator in the
ATS (Army Territorial Service) >from October 1944 and was stationed in
Douglas.

The War Office had requisitioned all the hotels and boarding houses
along the sea front in Douglas, blocks of which were allocated to
various purposes, including the internment camp, the Royal Signals
training camp, and Naval wireless operator training camps. I was
billeted in The Almeda, which I believe is still in existence.

All the camps were enclosed by barbed wire and the internment camp
was the next block to ours. I remember seeing the detainees sitting
in deck-chairs reading their books or snoozing in the sunshine. Many
of them were employed in the Pioneer Battalion and went out to work
every day. Shortly after I arrived, the war in Europe ended. It
would be nice to think some Brass Hat said, "Here's June. Now we can
all go home!" Dream on...

Further to Michael query and Harold's reply, there is a great deal of
information available - especially in Australia, where 2000 Austrian and
German Jewish refugees (who were arrested, mainly in London and interned on
the Isle of Man and in other camps) ended up, via the infamous HMT DUNERA,
and internment in Hay and Tatura, until well into 1944 for some of these men.

The Dunera (Hay-Tatura Association) Association in Melbourne is
contractible via their President :
email : <dunera@...>

There were several exchanges of postings on Jewishgen and these can be
obtained via Jewishgen's online archive.
The postings were about September/October/November 1997 with some at
other times, including December 2001/January 2002,
under the headings of :

Aliens, England/Internment in England 1939-45,
Isle of Man Internment/Internment in Britain 1939-45
Internment of Aliens in 20C Britain
Kitchener's Camp.

See also my article about U.K. I.D. papers etc. - NAZI-ISSUED PASSPORTS AND
UK ALIEN DOCUMENTS - in SHEMOT, the journal of The Jewish Genealogical
Society of Great Britain - March 2000 ++.

Apart >from the books that Harold listed, I suggest you also might like to
check out the following, some published in Australia :

1. The Dunera Affair - a Documentary Resource Book
edited by Paul R. Bartrop with Gabrielle Eisen

The Dunera Affair, includes a list of Official Governmental and
Bureaucratic Documents, including letters between the British and
Australian Governments.

2. The Dunera Scandal, by Cyril Pearl

3. The Dunera Internees, by Benzion Patkin

4. Walls of Wire, by Joyce Hammond

5. The Internment of Aliens, by Francois Lafitte, Penguin 1940

6. Deemed Suspect : A Wartime Blunder, by Eric Koch, Methuen 1980

7. The Internment of Aliens in 20th C Britain, ed. D. Cesarani and T.
Kushner, 1993.
Apparently this book provides additional resources to follow up on,
individuals who can be contacted for more information and refers to the
Wiener Library in London where David Cesarani is the Director of the
Institute of Contemporary History. This book can be obtained via Frank
Cass, 5804 N.E. Hasslo St., Portland, OR 97213-3644 USA.

There are also other books, which I have not been able to obtain in
Australia :

8. Barbed Wire on the Isle of Man, the Wartime British Internment of Jews -
by Alexander Ramata

9. Collar the Lot - How Britain Interned and Expelled Its Wartime
Refugees", by Peter and Leni Gillman, 334 pp.,
Quartet Books, 1980, ISBN 0 7043 2244 7.

According to Peter W this book gives just an excellent account of what was
happening to Britain at the time that prompted Churchill to intern enemy
aliens, and there's a lot of information on the round-up, treatment, and
internment of the "Dunera boys".

10. A BESPATTERED PAGE? - The internment of His Majesty's 'most loyal enemy
aliens" by Ronald Stent,
first published by Andre Deutsch Limited in 1980 (ISBN 0 233 97246 3)

N.B. Andre Deutsch, who died in London on 10.4.2000 was interned on the
Isle of Man.

11. What did you do in the War, Mummy? - edited by Mavis Nicholson,
published by Random House, London, ISBN 0 7011 3356 2 - apparently has one
memoire relating to internment on the Isel of Man - "Island Prison" by
Renate Olins.

12. THEY FOUND REFUGE - by Norman BENTWICH, published 1956?

13. FRED LOWEN - Dunera Boy, Furniture Designer, Artist
I have another book (December 2001), 'Fred Lowen, Dunera Boy, Furniture
Designer, Artist" - an autobiography by Fred Lowen, aka Fritz Lowenstein,
formerly of Berlin, with family links in eastern Poland. The book includes
many of Fred's sketches made on the Dunera voyage and in Hay and Tatura
camps. He briefly covers his family life in Berlin before WWII, his escape
from Berlin and Europe, as well as his life and achievements in furniture
design and manufacture, and as an artist, in Melbourne, Australia, after
his release >from internment.

14. January 2002 - Carole Glick Feinberg
wrote to me about an inspirational story about the DUNERA from
Rabbi Pesach Krohn's book is entitled "Around the Maggid's Table."
The story does not mention specific passengers' names, but Carole said it
is a dramatic story.
The article is "Castaways."

I also have a video of a TV documentary which was screened a couple of
years ago in Australia - although this mainly covers the experiences of the
so-called (and I hate this term) "The Dunera Boys". This was called "When
Friends were Enemies" and is available >from SBS Marketing, 4 Cliff St.
Milsons Pt. NSW Australia 2061.

It would also be worth checking out the posting >from Peter Lowe on 20th
January 2002 to JCR-UK SIG - Re: Isle of Man and Internment of "Enemy
Aliens" in UK in May 1940 in which he refers to documents available from
the Public Record Office Catalogue is on line as PROCAT
(<http://catalogue.pro.gov.uk/>http://catalogue.pro.gov.uk/) etc.

Also the Moving Here site has lots of links re so the so-called
"enemy aliens".

I have quite a lot of information about the "Dunera Boys" - my late
step-Grandfather, Dr. Josef Gold of Vienna, 1894-1956 was one - see above
++ and can send you more information if you want.

and internment in Hay and Tatura, until well into 1944 for some of these men.

The Dunera (Hay-Tatura Association) Association in Melbourne is

Documentary: The Legacy of Jedwabne #poland

Jose Gutstein

The documentary, "The Legacy of Jedwabne" is being broadcast on Link TV
(satellite tv station) on May 30 at 11pm, May 31 at 5pm and June 1 at 8pm.

The Legacy of Jedwabne is a feature-length documentary that tells the story
of a pogrom in 1941 in Jedwabne, Poland, a small town in Northeast Poland,
where Jews had lived side by side with local Poles for over two centuries.
By the outbreak of the Second World War, they constituted more than half of
the town's 2,500 inhabitants. Relations were peaceful for the most part
until July 10, 1941 when, just days after the Germans occupied Jedwabne,
almost the entire Jewish population of the town was murdered.

A Polish investigation into the massacre was conducted by the Institute of
National Memory (IPN), a government body responsible for investigating
crimes against the nation. In December 2001, IPN's director held a press
conference stating that, not only did local Poles perpetrate the massacre
without the active involvement of Nazi forces, but the Jedwabne pogrom was
not an isolated incident: hundreds of Jews were murdered in similar attacks
in over 20 towns in the region.

where are the records/Benjamin Singer/Sekiryany #ukraine

Albert Singer <al2chris@...>

I am still looking for my gf BENJAMIN SINGER, It is possible he came >from
Sekiryany (there are many alternate spellings) The town was in Bessarabia
gubernia Khotinsky near the river Valiaturkului The records I am looking
for may be jewish records but not necessarily I am looking for records
dating 1860 to 1880, I contacted the archives at Chernivisy but they
advised that the "records concerning the birth of the citizens of judaic
confession in the Sokiryany were never received at their archives.
I wonder whether these records could have ended up in Romania since up to
1918 Northern Bukovina was in Austria-hungry

Any suggestion as to where thse records might have been deposited?
