Polish-Jewish occupations #poland

Rivka Schirman <capitetes@...>

The occupations of immediate interest are:

krawiec - TAILOR; SEWER

piecznik - couldn't find anything
nauczciel - teacher
handlarz - SHOPKEEPER; TRADESMAN; HUCKSTER, trafficker
subiekt - salesman
kramarz - huckster
sluzba - service
farbiarz - - couldn't find anything
and kucharka - - couldn't find anything

Hope this helps a bit just the same.
BTW, there are several online English-Polish and Polish English
dictonaries, on top of google translate, for short line or simple
terms they are quite useful ...

Best regards

Avigdor,

The Kremenets Shtetl CO-OP has translated four Feepayer (Taxpayer) Lists
from the mid-1930s. Our translation spreadsheet for the 1935 Kremenets
Feepayer List lists occupations in Polish and English. To download the
spreadsheet, go to our Shtetlinks website

www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/Kremenets/web-pages/translated-documents.html

Click on the "1935 Kremenets Feepayer List" in the menu. Open the file
and look at the tab labeled "Occupations". There you will see a list of
115 Occupations in Polish and in English.

Avigdor Ben-Dov asked where to find a list of common occupations in Polish
translated into English free on the net.

The 1929 Polish Business Directory Project by JRI-Poland in cooperation with
JewishGen < http://www.jewishgen.org/jri-pl/bizdir/start.htm > in Section B
Trades Register lists occupations translated >from English to Polish on pages
2337 to 2348. The Polish occupations list on pages 2299-2306 refers to
business advertisements on pages 2361 to 2547.

Although the translations list is not Polish to English, it nevertheless
provides a useful genealogical tool that may be used in conjunction with a
Polish-English dictionary.

Courland municipal/administative capital ? #lithuania

Ben Forman <ben.forman@...>

Thanks for all your help tracing down the 1908 book about Courland
Rabbonim, the email journey has taken me >from here in Manchester to
Israel, Stanford and amazingly, finaly to just across the Pennines in
Leeds.

So now I have a copy of this very fragile book, more like a notebook
really, published 100 years ago, and possibly containing a reference to
an ancestor of mine who was head of the Courland Beth Din in the 1800s
(Rabbi Eli Shlomo Shivka Chaim BENSON/BENZION or simlar)

There are three index/contents page which I am hoping to get translated,
but in advance of that I am wondering if anyone has any idea which town
or city the Courland Beth Din would have ben situated in the mid 1800s.

Many thanks as always
