JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Yesterday I was at the Budapest Jewish Community office at Sip utca, and had an
interesting meeting with someone whose job is interfacing with with international Jewish community on matters having to do with Hungary. I shared with him a few experiences I have had while trying to obtain information at Sip utca, and I few ideas I had for perhaps making the place a little more "user-friendly". He gave me his contact information so that the rest of you can share any experiences you have had there (whether positive or negative), and any suggestions you might have. My own suggestion was to take the (already computerized) database of Budapest Jewish records, and put it online so that people could do their own research (rather than having to rely on the two ladies in the office to do it for them). His name is Tamas Desi, and his e-mail is foreign@mazsihisz.com. Best Wishes to All, Beth Long Budapest

When I first started looking at Viewmate, the generous viewers who
wanted to help would send their responses directly to the person who posted the letters or photos, and unless they wrote to the JewishGen list, the answers were not visible to anyone else. A little while ago the site was changed so that everyone can see the translations and other contributions, and I would like to express my appreciation to the Viewmate webmasters for this new feature. I "visit" Viewmate nearly every day, and I have often wondered if people received answers, and what they were. Plus, an answer given to one person may sometimes provide help to another who has a similar photo or item. Thank you to all who made this new sharing feature possible. Jim Gutterman is correct ("in NY defunct societies were "overseen" by NYS
insurance dept liquidation bureau..."). The NY Times ran an article about this aspect of the work of the New York Liquidation Bureau (NYLB; http://www.nylb.org/) on August 2, 2009: http://www.nylb.org/Documents/NYT_NYLB-and-Burial-Societies_8-3-09.pdf Since the B'ne Rezitza Association, Inc., was incorporated in New York State, the property in New Jersey may very well be administered in New York State--whether by the NYLB or by some other entity that may have been arranged when the association began to close out it's affairs. Since the association's papers are at YIVO, there may be a hint about plans for the cemetery property in the documents >from the final year. On September 10, 2009, shortly after the article referenced above appeared in the New York Times, the New Jersey Cemetery Board (http://www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/cemetery/) held a public meeting. The minutes of that meeting (http://www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/cemetery/minutes/cemmin_091009.htm) refer to the article in Section VII (For Your Information) and indicate that the problem described in New York is also a serious problem in New Jersey. The Katyn Forest Massacre -- 1940
#general
JHI Jewish Genealogy & Family Heritage Center <familyheritage@...>
Dear Friends and Colleagues:
Ironically, Saturday morning's air crash in Smolensk, Russia that took the lives of Poland's President Lech Kaczynski, his wife and 94 others might have, in a dreadful and tragic manner, succeeded in bringing far greater attention than might have been expected to the seventieth anniversary of a previous tragedy -- the wartime massacre by the Soviet NKVD secret police of over 20,000 members of the Polish officers' corps in the Katyn Forest and in a number of other locations in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. Among the officers murdered, approximately 5-8% percent were Jews: primarily doctors, lawyers and civil servants, as well as Polish Army Chief Rabbi Baruch Steinberg. Most of the victims' names are known, yet biographical details are often lacking. This being the case, the Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute extends an appeal to the world Jewish genealogical community to share with us any knowledge -- particularly any photos or documentation -- you might have of these officers slain in an attempt to prevent any Polish resistance to Soviet occupation. If you know of any of these officers or of another Jewish officer of the Polish armed forces whose wartime fate remains unknown, please contact us: The Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute Jewish Genealogy & Family Heritage Center ul. Tlomackie 3/5 00-090 Warsaw, Poland telephone: (+48-22) 828-5962 e-mail: <familyheritage@jhi.pl> Photocopies of such materials would be good, scans even better. Dear friends and Sarah,

What Sarah wrote is correct and I apologize for not having mentioned this in my original message. Nevertheless, this information was also published by Avotaynu (last issue of their newsletter, titled "Another Auschwitz Database"). Avotaynu is a very reliable source of genealogical data and issues, so if they also commented this site it is because they found some merit to mention it to the genealogical community. The idea is that if this site contains names that haven't been published by the Auschwitz official site then that list has value for us the researchers. Furthermore, the *key point* I was trying to make with my message was that *both lists are important* for those who lost Slovak relatives in Auschwitz exactly because the Slovakian Jews were the first one to be sent to Auschwitz and both lists cover the camp's initial period of operation. If I offended somebody by pointing a revisionist site then I am excusing myself here. Regards Tom

Looking for JASCHKOWITZ family
#poland
Karen Zale
Dear All,
I have recently found my Great Grandmother's maiden name was JASCHKOWITZ. Her first name was Hilda JASCHKOWITZ, b. 1846 - d. 1897 (New York City). Hilda's parents were Bernhard and Huirietta JASCHKOWITZ. On the JRI - Poland web site, I found several JASCHKOWITZES. 1. Bytom Marriages 1848 - 74 Prussia / Katowice Province AVELLIS, Berthold and JASCHKOWITZ, Natalie - father Bernhard JASCHKOWITZ from Gleiwitz. Natalie's age is 24 making her birthdate 1839 a possiblesister of Huirietta 2. Raciborz Births 1815-47 Prussia / Opole Province JASCHKOWITZ, Rosalie born 16 Feb 1842 Mother, Henriette - Mothersurn - LIPSCHUTZ. Question - does Mothersurn mean mother's maiden name? If so, I do not think this name is a sister to my Huirietta since further down is another name that I will get to. 3. Wroclaw PSA BMD 1889 - 1890 Prussia / Wroclaw Province SILBERMANN, Ernestine died 1897 age 60 years 9 months. Father - Bernhard, Mother - Henriette, Mothersurn SACHS, Spouse - Moritz, Spousesurn - JASCHKOWITZ. Does this mean that Ernestine was married to Mortiz SILBERMANN and her maiden name was JASCHKOWITZ? It would make her birthdate about 1837, making her another possible sister to Huirietta. However, if this mother's maiden name is SACHS, I do not think the previous birth Rosalie JASCHKOWITZ would be a sister. MOKRAUER, Rosalie, died 1893 at the age of 63 years 6 months. Father - Bernhard, Mother - Henriette SACHS, Spouse - Bernhard, Spousesurn - JASCHKOWITZ. It would make her birthdate about 1830 another possible sister. My Great Grandmother Hilda JASCHKOWITZ married Moritz Ehrenfreund. The city they lived in before coming to the United States was Tarnow. They had five children. Bernhard b. 1869 (My grandfather) Sigmund b. 1871 Flora b. 1872 Heinrich b. 1875 Regina b. 1879 I have looked in both the Jewishgen JGFT and FTJP and did not see any connections to my family. If anyone has these names in their family tree, please get in touch with me. I would also appreciate your ideas if these people belong in my family.
