Info re 2 sisters from Lithuania who were reunited last year in Israel after a 73 year separation #lithuania

steve cohen <s4635@...>

Last year, two sisters >from Lithuania were reunited in Israel after a
separation of 73 years.

Rachel Raskis (Probably Rashkes) left Lithuania for Uruguay in 1937 while
her sister remained in Lithuania. This happened when Rachel's 16-year-old
grand daughter started asking questions and discovered that Luba moved to
Israel in 2000.

If anyone knows which Shtetl or City in Lithuania the family lived before
going to Uruguay, please tell me.

Thank you.

I am searching for information and/or family of Rabbi Note (Natan) ben
Rabbi Yitzchak. Rabbi Note ben Yitzchak lived in Vilna around the
middle of the 18th century and was one of the mainstays of the Vilna
community. One of R. Note ben Yitzchaks' descendants was
the writer R Mordechai Aharon GINZBERG author of Kiryat Sefer, Dvir,
Hazorfatim berussia, Pi Hachiros, Toldos Benai Odom, "Aviezer", etc.

According to the Hebraist and writer, Yitzchak ben Aharon RITTENBERG
in an article 'Kehilat Kalvariya' in Yalkut Maarabi NY 1904 one of R.
Note ben Yitzchak's daughters married R. Ahrele (Aharon) NATAS ben
Zeev Wolf who was a dayan in Kalvariya, Lithuania:

Rabbi Ahrele (Aharon) ben Zeâ??v Wolf, was one of six brothers who were
famous and G-d fearing (rabbis); Moshe and Aharon, Shamai and Hillel
(The Maggid of Rotsk, author of the sefer Hillel ben Shachar),
Elazor and Gamliel. Also the writer, Yitzchak ben Aharon RITTENBERG,
was descended >from the aforementioned R Aharon, being the grandson of
his daughter and his father was called by his name Aharon.

I am especially interested in finding the name of the daughter of R.
Note ben Yitzchak who married Rabbi Ahrele. It might have been Ita or
Pessiya or Malka. I also am looking for the connection to the Ginzburg
family.

Any info about any of the above-mentioned names will be deeply appreciated.

Strzemieszyce: WENGER family #poland

Ann Linder

When I do a search for family records, in particular for family WENGER
(WEGIER), there are no records that come up in the town of
Strzemieszyce (it was near Sosnowiec).

I checked out Miriam Weiner's Routes to Roots website and there are no
records for this town.

Does anyone have info they can share with me about this? I have
WENGER relations who were born and lived in Strzemieszyce.
thanks so much for any help with this query.

Also, does Strzemieszyce not exist anymore??

I send an email to archiw@siedlce.com to request the cost for ordering
a record >from Siedlce.

I got the address >from Polish State Archives Regional Archive and Branch
contact information.

Does anyone have an updated email address for them? I would rather not
write a letter as I do not speak, read, or write Polish. Also not sure
if the mailing address in the contact information is correct.

Thanks

This is an interesting subject indeed but I quote :

'There was no legal obligation for them to drop their family names,
but they often were encouraged to do so. '
'encouraged' yes - not 'urged'.

My friends' son 'Varseaux' regained his original 'Warshawsky' name
when he made alyah in Israel...

Some French Jews wish to revert to old names
From: rdleeson@sbcglobal.net

A story in the July 19, 2010 Los Angeles Times reports on the
phenomenon of many Jews who immigrated into France in the post-Holocaust
era, >from Eastern Europe and North African territories, who were urged
by the French government of the time to take names that were more
French. Many did so. Now, with the wish to return to their family
roots, and display through their original names who there are, they are
forbidden by French law to change their names back, once again.

Opening closed birth records... #general

Rosanne Leeson <rdleeson@...>

Dear fellow Genners,

In assisting a friend to learn more of her family history I have run
into a roadblock, in an area in which I have no experience.

Her mother's father abandoned his family when her mother was a baby. She
was born in NYC in 1928. The mother remarried, and her mother was
adopted by this stepfather, and her original birth record was sealed.
She and her mother would now like to learn more of the birth father.

Is there any way in which the birth record can be unsealed in NYC for
the person to whom it applied?

I would be most grateful for any information that might help.

Thank you in Advance,
Rosanne Leeson
