Seeking help with a missing person, Russia, 1920s #general

Lea Haber Gedalia <leahgedalia@...>

Dear friends
I am seeking help with a case of a missing person.
Moshe Gueshtel born in Telekhany was incarcerated in Turinsk ,
Sverdelovsk Oblast (in the Urals) . He sent a letter to his family in
1925 to announce his freedom and to let them know that he has passed
the lawyers bar and got a job as a lawyer in Dzerzhinsky in the area
of Nizhny Tagil, So I believe he was a communist.
Nothing was ever heard >from him after .
Any suggestions how to go about this mystery ?
All the Best

Re: using different surname than father: why? #general

Sheldon Dan <sheldan1955@...>

Deborah,

I think I have found many instances where this has happened. In one
of my lines, the brother of my great-grandmother, Zipora Annie SOBOTA,
adopted the surname BROADMAN, which was their mother's maiden name.
In fact, there have been many places where the surname suddenly
changed to another, which was carried through by the descendants.
It is a good idea to note these changes in your tree when they happen.

Kishinev Jewish Cemetery news #bessarabia

Yefim Kogan

Dear researchers,

I am writing about Jewish Cemetery in Kishinev, the largest remaining Jewish
cemetery in Bessarabia/Moldova.

You remember the story that the Prime Minister of Moldova "...demanded a
plan to restore the Jewish cemetery in Kishinev".

The cemetery was cleaned up in the fall of 2018, and you can see >from a
photo how large is the cemetery, and as people on the ground are saying, it
was cleaned up.

Aerial view:
http://www.jewishgen.org/bessarabia/files/cemetery/Kishinev/Damage2019/Kishi
nevJewishCemeteryFeb19-2019.jpg

Here are the other news - the work was done formally, in a rush and many
tombstones were damaged!!! Here are couple of photos with recently damaged
tombstones:

http://www.jewishgen.org/bessarabia/files/cemetery/Kishinev/Damage2019/Kishi
nevJewishCemeteryFeb20-2019-3.jpg

Now, I am getting information that there will not going to be construction
of a new building at the cemetery (museum or so), but there is going to be
build a memorial probably to the victims of the Holocaust...

A number of people working for JewishGen Bessarabia SIG are photographing
the tombstones at this cemetery. One of them is Sergei Daniliuk who made
these photos. I may put more online for your view.

If you have issues seeing the images, or questions, please email me at

Kishinev Yiskor Book #bessarabia

Alan Levitt

I just received a copy of the "Jews of Kishinev," a 240 page Yiskor
book originally published in Hebrew in Tel Aviv in 1950. It is a lot
more that just about Kishinev Jews. Skimming through it, you can
easily see it provides not only detailed descriptions about the
pogroms and life before and afterward, but much information that can
offer context and deeper understanding to other areas of Bessarabia,
as well. And, our own Bessarabia SIG founder and leader, Yefim Kogan,
translated it.

JGS of Maryland March 24, 2019, program #general

Susan Steeble

Speaker: Peter Wambach
Title: ">from Whence We Came"
Date and Time: Sunday, March 24, 2019, 1:30 p.m.
Location: Pikesville Library's meeting room, 1301 Reisterstown Rd,
Pikesville, MD

Please join us on Sunday, March 24, 2019, to hear Peter Wambach
present ">from Whence We Came." This genealogy search began with a
challenge >from Peter Wambach's father to his children to research his
family history and ancestry. His father was an only child whose father
died when he was only 4 years old, so he knew very little about his
father. He wanted to "touch the hand of a living, breathing relative."
This talk describes this search, which extended to three continents,
and its eventual outcome.

Peter Wambach was born in Harrisburg, PA, on May 12, 1946, and was the
sixth of the fourteen children of Peter and Margherita (Zarbo)
Wambach. Educated in the parochial school system in central
Pennsylvania, he graduated >from Penn State University with a BS degree
in 1970. He worked in the open hearth of Bethlehem Steel Corporation,
in real estate sales, as a lobbyist, and as an executive in a
construction firm. He retired in 2006 after a 36-year career with the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, having served as an employee in the
House of Representatives, Revenue, Property and Supplies, and General
Services departments. In addition, he served 12 years as a member of
the Pennsylvania House of Representatives >from 1980 to 1992. He is an
11-year member of the Board of Trustees of Harrisburg Area Community
College. He resides in Harrisburg with his wife, Urszula. He is the
father of two children and two step-children and has three
grandchildren.

The program is free for paid members and $5 for non-members (applied
to JGSMD membership fee) after their first meeting. Please check our
web site at www.jgsmd.org for late updates and for the time, location,
and program of future meetings.
