Discrepancy between facts & passenger lists #general

Paul Silverstone

In searching for the arrival in Winnipeg, Canada, of Annie Finkelstein
and her two children, 1886-87,
Finkelstein, Annie 44 f
Finkelstein, Miriam 8 f
Finkelstein, David 6 m
coming >from Volhynia, to Winnipeg

I discovered the following who I think are they, despite the difference
in sex and origin.
Annie's husband and other children arrived four months earlier, via
Hamburg. (Tebel is a family name)

Hamburg lists, s.s. Hamburg, Hamburg to Hull, departing 25 Nov 1886:
Finkelstein, Abram 30 m
Finkelstein, Marie 6 f
Finkelstein, Tebel 4 m
coming >from Suwalki, going to Quebec

Canadian passenger list:
s.s. Peruvian, Liverpool to Halifax, arriving 19 Dec 1866
Finkelstein, A 30 f
Finkelstein, Marie 6 f
Finkelstein, Tebel 4 m
going to Winnipeg

Am I wrong to distrust the passenger manifest facts?

Vel simply means 'or'.

Our ancestors >from Central and Eastern Europe were used to dealing with
organisations and communities for whom their own names seemed alien,
so they often changed them to blend in. My grandmother's uncle born in
Dabrowa Tarnowska in 1867 was named Israel Marcus MILLET, but after
emigrating to England in 1887 always called himself Max MILLET. I have
also found twins, Hirsh and Dobe Keller, born in Tarnow in 1860. They
have separate entries. So I'm confident your Max and Markus are one and
the same.

Does anyone know in what newspaper(s) a Jewish family living in
Washington, DC, around 1920 would have posted birth, marriage, or death
announcements? The Washington Post?

Was there a popular Jewish newspaper published in the city around that
time?

Berko vs Berkir and Holdenberg vs Goldenberg #ukraine

Marilyn Levinson

I have obtained some records >from Teofipol. I knew that my ancester's name
was Berko Soifer in Teofipol I found an Ioinya Soifer
with the patronymic Berkiv. .He would be the right age to be the son
of Berko
Is it right to guess that Berkiv is just a variation of Berko?
Also I found a number of Holdenbergs in Teofipol. I looked in Beiders
dictionary of surnames in the Russian empire and found that there was no
"h" used in the Russian alphabet, and instead was directed to look
for the name under the letter "g".

I had many relatives in Teofipol who were named Goldenberg.
Would it be safe
to assume that the Holdenbergs might be Goldenbergs? Thank you for
your help.

How would twins be listed in the record books, (Rawa Ruska, 1897). #galicia

Mark London <mrl@...>

Hi - I was given a list of children who were born to a family that
lived in Rawa Ruska. One son was named Max, who survived the
Holocaust, living in Uruguay. I don't know his exact year of birth,
or Hebrew name, as he lived in Uruguay. However, I can find many
recorded births for the family. Including an 1897 birth record,
where given name, looks like "Markus vel Max". See the bottom of
the following web page, for the original record.

http://agadd.home.net.pl/metrykalia/300/sygn.%202172/pages/PL_1_300_2172_0003.htm

Can anyone tell me what the meaning is of 2 given names,
separated by vel? It's transcribed in JRI-Poland as just "v". Could
it mean a twin? A death record for 1yr old child named "Markus",
occurs a year later. Without the Max. Thanks for any information.
