Sophie Caplan z"l #galicia

We learned with sorrow of the death on Saturday, January 20, of Sophie
Shoshanah Caplan, one of Gesher Galicia's earliest members.

A child survivor of the Holocaust, Sophie was born in Germany in 1933.
Her family fled to France before the outbreak of World War II, and
migrated to Sydney, Australia, after the war.

Sophie's family's losses in the Shoah led her to explore her family
history. Among the many branches that she researched were her
mother's HAUSMANN, HALPERIN, REITER, and STEIN families, >from
Bolekhiv, Dolyna, Kalush, and other towns in Eastern Galicia.

Sophie was the founding president of the Australian Jewish
Genealogical Society and edited its publication, the Kosher Koala, for
many years. She was also Avotaynu's long-time Contributing Editor for
Australia and a past president of the Australian Jewish Historical
Society. More recently, she served on the Board of Directors of the
International Institute for Jewish Genealogy.

In 2000, the Australian government awarded Sophie the Medal of the
Order of Australia for her contributions to the study of Australian
history and genealogy.

Sophie's husband Leslie, a leader of Australian Jewish community, died
in 2006.

Sophie will be buried on Monday, January 22, at Macquerie Park
Cemetery, near Sydney.

We extend our sympathies to Sophie's sons -- Gideon, Jonathan, and
Benjamin -- and to the rest of the family. May her memory remain as a
blessing to them and her contributions an inspiration to us all.

From Majorca to Brest-Litovsk in 434 years #belarus

Family knowledge and FTDNA Family Finder matches on my gr-grandfather's
(Yitzhak Opinheim) line hit a brick wall in Brest-Litovsk, Belarus about 1825.
YDNA matches and FTDNA's Iberian Ashkenaz project place his direct ancestor
(name unknown) in Majorca in 1391. I have since added him to the FTDNA Xueta
DNA project.

There are Family Finder matches between descendants (myself, siblings and 3
cousins) of Yitzhak Opinheim and a descendant of a Xueta family that lived in
Majorca in 1391. This descendant has not responded to multiple emails about the
match.

What to do? How and where do I look for a 434 years missing link?
All suggestions - research-wise and DNA-wise - will be appreciated.

My name is Leonard Schwab and my JewishGen ID# is 54510.

My 103 year old mother-in-law, Reba Cohn Weiner, has asked me to find
any data >from her grandparents' generation who lived and died in
Ukraine when it was part of the Russian Empire. I cannot,
unfortunately, read or speak the Cyrillic-based languages.

Reba's maternal grandparents are of special interest. They were from
Ekaterinoslav and their surname was WATKIN. The little bit of family
history that Reba was exposed to as a child growing up in Philadelphia
did not include any idea if her ancestors lived in the Gubernia or
City of Ekaterinoslav. I am going on a hunch that it was the city
rather than the rural parts of the Gubernia. I base that hunch on the
family lore that Reba's maternal grandfather was either owner or
manager of a factory that made military uniforms for the czar's army.

There were five WATKIN children who all emigrated to the U.S. without
their parents: Abraham (b.1878) was the only son; the four daughters
were Sarah (b.1883), Clara (b.1885), Elizabeth (b.1890), and Rosa
(b.1896). Birth years are inferred >from census data. Rosa was the
last to emigrate in 1913 through the Port of Baltimore. The ship
manifest indicates her father's name was "R. WATKIN" and his home as
"Ekaterinoslav". Ports of disembarkation are not known for the other
four children. Also there is no knowledge of where and how the WATKIN
parents died. It is only known that they never emigrated to the U.S.

Family lore has it that Reba's grandmother specifically wanted all her
daughters to have "English sounding names". Coupled with the
suggestion that the WATKIN surname is more English sounding than
Russian sounding, one wonders if the entire WATKIN family may have
originally emigrated >from England to Russia.

Hopefully, members of the Ukraine SIG might have some ideas on how to
obtain new information on Reba's WATKIN grandparents.

While researching the Lithuania database I found some birth records in
Rokiskis that has in the comments field the name /Frydrikhshtat.

My understanding is that the person was born in Rokiskis and the father is
from Fridrikhshtat/Frydrikhshtat. Can anyone tell me where the most likely
place Fridrikhshtat/Frydrikhshtat would be?
