Argentina Directory #latinamerica

Jose Gutstein <jmg-miami@...>

For those of you looking for current family living in Argentina, the
directory is on the web and is very easily searchable. It's one of the best
there is.

http://www.paginas-doradas.com.ar/explorer/guia_telefonica/frame_telefonica.
htm

Or you can start at: http://www.contractjobs.com/tel/ Click on Argentina,
and go >from there.

For Appelido (surname), you can enter the beginning portion and it will
search for all names with that same beginning. For example, Carol Skydell
was searching for SKIDELSKY, so if you enter "SKIDELSK" it will bring up
both the names SKIDELSKI and SKIDELSKY, the "I" and the "Y" having the exact
same sound in Spanish.

For Provincia (province), put "Todas" and it will bring up the results of
all the provinces at once.

Schei as a first name #general

A. E. Jordan

Hello everyone -- can someone help with a name?

My great gandfater when he came to the United States wrote down (or told) the
clerk at the court for naturalization that his name was Schei JORDAN. That
was in 1894 when he filed his first papers. On December 31 1903 he is
naturalized and one paper still says Schei JORDAN and then there is a small
piece of additional paper that says Samuel JORDAN the name I know his as.

Anyone heard the name Schei? Was does it mean? What language is it? Any other
information on the orgins?

Also here a wild one, if he arrived in 1889 and filed first papers in 1894,
why did he not complete his naturalization until 1903? Was he slow, forget to
go back to the court or what?

Finally I have just spent the day in the Hudson County New Jersey court house
and if you need information about the experience email me and I can tell you
all about it. Some of them are very helpful. I got five sets of
naturalzation papers -- not much info on them either. I can tyell anyone who
is interested the content -- my papers date 180s-1900s.

Thanks in advance for a few replies. This system is great!

Other bits of info gleaned from City Directories #general

I recently stumbled across an unexpected way of determining
married names of females. While scanning the Newark City
Directories (published almost every year >from about 1880 to
1965) for family names of interest ONE YEAR AT A TIME, I
came across LAST chronological references to several women
in which the name of the man they had just married was
listed. I wish you similar luck.
Last May at the State Library in Berlin, I forward and back-
ward, year-by-year, in the Berlin Address Book, tracking
my ggf. He first appeared in 1902, confirming other
information I had that he came >from elsewhere. Now, at
least, I knew about when he moved and therefore what
years to inquire about in which place.

Then, again year-by-year (well, I jumped 5 years at a time,
then narrowed it down to one-by-one when I saw a change)
I found in 1925 the given name in the listing changed from
his to my ggm's. Now I had a very close approximation of
his date of death.

My next step: Write to Landeseinwohneramt Berlin to see
what they might have on file.

A note: Be a careful about street names in the former East
Germany. Many were changed by the DDR, and were
changed again after the Wall fell. Locals know the history,
but I'm not sure where to find a written list.

LDS Family History Catalogue #general

Warren Kohn <wkohn@...>

I have been doing my family genealogy which has taken me to Kaluszyn,
Poland, where my father came from. At the FHC, I pulled up the list of
microfilm for Kaluszyn. The index seems to indicate that the records
are also found under Minsk Mazowiecki. This may seem like a stupid
question but having been through these microfilms and knowing that they
are Polish records, can I safely assume that these microfilms will also
include birth, death and marriage records?

I ask because I now have some reason to believe that one of my g'mothers
came >from Minsk Mazowiecki (which the family refers to as "Kleine Minsk").
And, if it is so, then I have to go back and review all of the microfilm
again but for new names.

Does anybody know the Rytse Strafse Synagogue Berlin Germany #general

Eric Richard Sinclair <RichardSinclair@...>

Does anybody know anything about the Rytse Strafse Synagogue in
Berlin, Germany. This synagogue is referred to in an application for
membership on 14 August 1969 at South Manchester Hebrew
Congregation, Wilbraham Road, Manchester, England, as the place
of marriage for my paternal Grandparents, Adolf David SCHINDLER
(Avraham David ben Yaacov) b. 3 February 1901 Breslau, Germany
(Wroclaw, Poland), d. 14 June 1984 Manchester, England, and Signe
STEINSAPIR (Chaye Sarah bat Eliezer) b. 18 May 1906 Lund, Sweden,
d. 13 February 1994 Cheadle, England, on 5 July 1925. I am not sure
that I have spelt the name of the Synagogue correctly as the
application is hand written. I have looked in various books on Berlin
and searched the internet but to no avail. My Grandparents were
fortunate to have left Berlin and entered Harwich, England on 2
March1938 with my Father Siegbert SCHINDLER (Zevulun Yaakov ben
Avraham Dovid) b. 12 July 1933 Berlin, Germany, d. 3 February 1963

Synagogues destroyed.

I think there is a "grooms index" which you ought to be able to have
searched

Re: Tarnow Shtetls #general

Howard J. Fink <how@...>

You should check out the JRI-PL database on JewishGen. We just had our
first set of records go on the web, Births in Tarnow 1863-1870. Some
records indicate if the birth occurred in an outlying town, and I have
seen both towns you mention. In addition I know that there are several
ADLER and MULLER/MUELLER entries.
