I am posting the data in the hope that it will be of some value to other

Re: Bronx, N.Y. death notice? #general

"What newspaper would be appropriate to check out a death that
ocurred in the Bronx, NY in 1989?"

To my knowledge, The Bronx has never had a borough-wide general
newspaper that carries death notices. The best sources are the major New
York City newspapers, specifically the New York Times, the Daily News, and
the New York Post.

Other suggestions are writing to the New York City Department of
Health, Office of Vital Records, 125 Worth Street, New York, N.Y., 10013,
paying $15 for a copy of the death certificate, which they provide to
certain relatives. The Department of Health can also be contacted via
http://www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/doh/html/vr/vrdappl.html .

Death certificates prior to 1949 are part of the public record and
may be obtained through the New York City Municipal Archives at 31
Chambers Street, New York, N.Y., 10007, telephone 212-788-8580, or
http://www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/doris/html/1vital.html . Their fee is also
$15, and includes a search of two calendar years. If you're not sure of
the year and they have to search through all 8 years, it'll cost $60.

Good luck.

Davidovitch Family & The Lithuania Archives #lithuania

danielle freedman <daniellefreedman640@...>

Dear Group,

I was wondering if someone could help me.

I started my geneology research back in March this year and rapidly found my DAVIDOVITCH family on the ALD database. Straight away I wrote to the
Lithuanian Archives about my family giving them details and film numbers >from the ALD database and payment.

I have since learnt to be precise (last night in a conversation with my
aunt) that my own grandfather was not born in Liverpool as previously
thought, but in Russia along with his brothers and sisters. Although i did not request this information initially back in March, what shall i do? - should i write a new letter to them requesting my grandfathers information additional to the search, or will they find it anyway seeing as i am requesting my grandfathers - g grandfather information? will they send me all the details of this DAVIDOVITCH family up to the present day. -Can someone who has experince of this please advise me?

Jewish cemeteries #latvia

Many of you who saw the long article entitled "The Cemetery Nobody
Wants" in The Jewish Week of October 18, 2002 have publicly expressed
your shock and dismay at the condition of Bayside Cemetery in Ozone
Park, Queens. My reaction was to feel even more commitment to the
burial registry project, JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial Registry
(JOWBR), as Bayside is not unique. There are many abandoned Jewish
cemeteries in U.S. communities which no longer have any living Jews.
These once thriving communities are now history, but the cemeteries
remain, abandoned and forlorn. They are as worthy of our attention
as the cemeteries in eastern and central Europe. However, no one
seems to care--not Jewish state historical societies, not the
descendants of the original settlers, not Jewish genealogists in
general.

The Jewish Week article quoted Allan Jordan about his reactions to
Bayside, but I want to tell another aspect of Allan. Two years ago he
volunteered to coordinate the indexing of burial records of the
Kurlander landsmanschaft plots on the East Coast, but his progress
has been slow. He has been frustrated and discouraged as few people
volunteered to help. So what hope can we have to index all the
burials in cemeteries like Bayside?

One would hope that members of the Early American SIG would take an
interest in abandoned U.S. cemeteries and create projects to index
these tombstones. One would hope that volunteers >from other SIGs
will step forward to help all over the U.S. in photographing and
indexing the records of local cemeteries, many of which are rich in
historical detail about landsmanschaftn and our ancestors. There are
a few people, whose names I will not mention here, who have been
active in indexing cemeteries and landsmanschaft plots and donating
their data to JOWBR. We need hundreds more dedicated to this task.

any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.
