"Obscure" Shtetls and Dorfs #general

Joan Rosen <jgrosen@...>

Officially a "shtetl" was a market town--one large enough to have a market.
A "dorf" (German for "village" and perhaps Yiddish for the same) was smaller
than that, and did not have a market. If you lived in a dorf, presumably
you would have to travel to the nearest shtetl to buy goods. (This I
learned in a history course taught at Gratz College by Dr. Michael
Steinlauf.)

I have posted on ViewMate the backs of three photographs of
SHATZMAN family members. Do the photographer's details
provide any clues as to the location?
We think they possibly came >from the Vitebsk area.

The references are VM7681, VM6782 and VM7683. They can be viewed at:

Any help appreciated.

There are two brothers who are physicians and practice independently in Glen
Burnie, MD, halfway between Baltimore and Annapolis. They are Mayer and
Elliot GORBATY. Perhaps if you are not aware of them, they might be a resource.

Crossing borders #general

Ida & Joseph Schwarcz

There has been some discussion lately about marriages across borders. Before
the need for visas, it was quite common for merchants in the Russian Empire
to travel some distance to do business, and if one had a daughter and he met
a man with a son, and they could come to some kind of agreement, there was
often a wedding in the offing. Usually, if the bride's father was
well-to-do, he would offer to support the young couple for a number of years
while the bridegroom studied Torah. My mother's aunt was married to a young
scholar whose merchant father had met her merchant father and made the
shiddukh. They lived together quite happily, eventually producing ten
children.

Hello
While searching for information about my grandfather, I have discovered
excellent resources at the Manchester Jewish museum, some of which can be
viewed at www.movinghere.org.uk website. It is certainly worth looking at
what they hold- I think I've found an obscure group photograph with my
grandfather on it, which has confirmed his Jewish background for me.

criminal records Poland #general

Susan Monty <susan@...>

Family lore states that my great grandfather,Simcha BUNIM GOLDWASSER was a
bootmaker in the old town of Lodz. He was murdered in his shop by assassins
in a case of mistaken identity. They were seeking to kill his assistant who
was at lunch. They turned up at the funeral, presumably still seeking their
man, and were arrested. This must have occurred between 1900 and 1913. Is it
possible that any criminal or press records might exist? How would I begin
to investigate this. Many thanks.

Naturalization Documents Lee's Summit, Mo. #general

sangreenb@...

Hi Again:

As suggested by many of you I have found a Certificate no. for the documents.
However, the name of the court is not legible. Will have to contact the
nearest NARA to see if they have a better copy.

There is another question: On one of the ancestor's documents I find a copy
of the index card. There are some letters I don't understand.

The letters HAL are written on the card. As well as Carbon/Red Lodge. As Ira
Leviton sugggested these documents were copied on carbon paper and then sent
from the courts to NARA. That would account for the word Carbon. Would Red
Lodge be the brand of carbon paper.

The HAL has me wondering, unless it mean Holland America Line.
Lots of questions - any answers?

Thank you to all those who sent me suggestions on how I can get legible
copies of these documents.

1946 Poznan business directory #general

Logan J. Kleinwaks

A small 1946 directory for Poznan listing some businesses and their
proprietors is now available online at the Digital Library of Wielkopolska
(www.wbc.poznan.pl/dlibra/docmetadata?id=28793). Because the business
listings are organized first according to business type and then
alphabetically by surname, it is not trivial to search the directory for
particular surnames of interest. The business listings are also not
separately indexed by street address. Therefore, I have made this directory
searchable at www.kalter.org/search (scroll down to the bottom). I do not
know whether any Jews are listed. Please let me know if you find it useful.

The result of a search is a list of numbers referencing images on the
Digital Library website that contain matches to your search term. The FAQ
on my search site describes how to view the images that interest you.
Please also read the description of the various search methods at the top of
the search page.

Best regards,

I went to the HS of Commerce in mid-town which had a cornerstone set in 1863
but that was probably too far north.
There was also Charles Evans Hughs High School which was downtown and that
is a possibility as I believe it was as old as Commerce was.
