Visiting England- Do you Need Pictures? (Kew) #unitedkingdom

Just to alert you, Jeni, in case you didn't know about the changes. (Easy not
to check if you "know" something, but someone else has changed it without your
knowledge! - as I know to my cost.)

TNA at Kew has been making changes about when you can visit (closing on Mondays),
and car-parking charges. It's important to check their site before planning the
final details of your trip, - also in case they happen to choose your visit dates
to close for a stock-take or something, as well!

Translation Request (Russian) - Postcard sent from Belarus in 1916 #belarus

smoody61@...

Hi,
I have a postcard that was sent to my paternal grandmother Rose
EINBUND in Pittsburgh in 1916. It was probably written by
someone in her family in Russia (in Parichi - near Shchedrin- in
the Belarus region.) I'd like to have it translated to English. I believe
it's in Russian.

I've posted a request for the translation (Russian to English) on
Viewmate. The Viewmate ID is 14695

Thanks! I appreciate all of the great translation and interpretation
help that I've been receiving >from genners around the world.

Rev Roodman. #southafrica

Saul Issroff <saul65@...>

Elona Steinfeld is trying to verify the information the Country
Communities Project has on Rev Roodman.

This is what is currently recorded on the Ladybrand database.

Roodman/Rudman Rev Mordechai 'Marcus', Sarah & fam.
Resident 1920 -d. 1930 He was living in Ladybrand when he
offered his services as a teacher to the King William's Town Hebrew
Congregation in 1920. He did not move to KWT. According to Irene
Friedlander there is conflicting information about Rev. Rudman;
firstly he left for Cape Town by 1928, but according to the cemetery
database listing, Rev. Roodman d. 1930, aged 62 and was buried in
Ladybrand. Ch: Lena m. M. Segal, Fanny, Colly and Samuel m. Jean
daughter of Rev. & Mrs. M. Cohen of Potchefstroom.

He is also recorded in Paul Roux 1925 and Colesburg 1922. So the
information we have is rather confusing.

If anyone has information that can clarify this please contact
Museum@beyachad.co.za

Ships leaving Odessa to Palestine #ukraine

trock4@...

I have been searching for the immigration records of my maternal
grandfather, Max Taradash. He left Odessa around 1912-1914, first
going to Palestine and then to the US. In 1915 he was in Bayonne,
NJ as proved by his WWI draft registration. Soon after that he
went to Chicago and ultimately to the Twin Cities, MN.

I have been unable to find him arriving in the US and am uncertain
where to look since he did not come a direct route.

Do any of you have suggestions where to look for ships leaving
Odessa as well as Palestine?

Thanks very much

New History of Jews who fought on the side of the Boers, 1899-1902 #southafrica

saul65@...

During the Anglo-Boer war of 1899-1902, an estimated 300 Jews served
in the Boer armed forces. These ranged >from those fighting in the
commandos through to medical officers, POW guards, commissariat
officers and town guard members. Individual Jews were involved in
nearly all of the war's best-known incidents, including the famous
battles of Magersfontein, Colenso and Spioenkop, the sieges of
Mafeking, Ladysmith and Kimberley, the capture and escape of Winston
Churchill and throughout the guerilla campaign. Many were interned for
lengthy periods in POW camps on St Helena, Bermuda and elsewhere.

While a number of shorter articles on this subject have appeared over
the years, no attempt to date has been made to write a full history of
this still little-known aspect of South African Jewish and Anglo-Boer
War historiography. A new book, entitled Boerejode - Jews in the
Afrikaner Freedom Struggle, 1899-1902 by South African journalist and
historian David Saks, has now filled this gap.

Boerejode is based on original research conducted by the author in
the State Archives, the archives of the SA Jewish Board of Deputies
and the library of the SA Museum of Military History. It further
builds on the extensive original research conducted by Rabbi L I
Rabinowitz and well-known authors like Eric Rosenthal and SA Rochlin
in the 1930s and 1940s. These include the reminiscences of some of
the Jewish "Oudstryders" (veterans), which provide compelling and
unique perspectives of the war >from Jews who devoted themselves to
fighting for the Boer cause.

An appendix provides an annotated Nominal Roll of all Jewish
participants in the Boer military. Photographs and documents >from the
SAJBD Archives are included.

About the Author

David Saks is a writer, historian and Jewish communal professional. He
has written extensively on South African Jewish, political and
military history for a wide range of local and international
publications. He is editor of the journal Jewish Affairs and the
Associate Director of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies.
