LECHTMAN, SACKS, and BECKER in Philadelphia #general

David Simpson <simpson_david12@...>

I am searching for information on Rose and Adeline BECKER >from Philadelphia.
Rose was born about 1915 in New Jersey, Adeline about 1921 in Pennsylvania.
In the 1920 US census, Rose lived with her parents Morris and Sarah BECKER
on Allegheny Avenue, Philadelphia. Morris was in the grocery business. But
by 1930, both girls were living with their aunt and uncle Katie and Morris
(not Harry!) SACKS on S. Orkney Street, and I cannot trace their parents.

I am interested in their mother, Sarah BECKER, because I believe she might
have been Sore LECHTMAN >from Krasnoye, Ukraine. She would have been born
about 1894 or 95, and emigrated in 1912. I am also looking for her sister
Libe LECHTMAN, who arrived in 1913. Both these girls had Philadelphia bank
records for them in Katie Sack's name.

If anyone knows anything about Katie and Morris Sacks, Sarah and Morris
Becker, Libe, Lechtman or Rose and Adeline Becker, I would greatly
appreciate hearing >from you.

Why were Jews allowed to immigrate in Cuba in the 1930's? #general

lehrer

Hello,

Does anyone know why the Jews were allowed to immigrate into Cuba
in the 30's >from the previous century?

Why was an exception made for the Jews whilst I heard that the
Cuban authorities were very strict to allow immigration for
white people (does anyone have any source for this claim?)?

I am mainly talking about the Jews >from Antwerp that were working
in the diamond industry.

Thank you for your help,

"in" names #belarus

azmyrna@...

Thanks to everyone who responded to my query.
Clearly there are lots of people whose name has that ending.
That it meant 'child of' makes sense.
Also, I now understand why the males were Verkin and the
women Verkina

What is fascinating is that it implies that there was an
ancient ancestor who was Vera and that there are multiple
D'vera or Vera women in the family.

I believe the Russian Empire had a revision list in 1874-75, not 1887
(although I suppose certain regions could have had local censuses -
which are really lists of residents for tax purposes).

I don't think any Russian revision list has even been transcribed in toto.
In fact, I doubt whether any revision has ever been reproduced in toto.
Such lists for many Russian towns have not even been microfilmed, and
the current Belarussian government has prevented new microfilming for years.

On JewishGen, I see it's up to various groups to organize and get whatever
data they can, arrange to get it translated and mounted on the various
databases.

I helped coordinate such a project with the 1811 revision list for
Slutsk (now part of the "All Belarus Database" on JewishGen).
At this year's IAJGS conference, I hope to propose a similar project
for the same town.

seeking any and all permutations/locations of:
KASOVSKI/Y, KASOWSKI/Y, KOSOFSKY, KOSOVSKY, KOSOWSKY, KOSOW, KOSSOVE, etc.
Slutsk: DAVIDSON, GELFAND (also Sioux City, Iowa)
Klodawa: JARET, JARETSKY, JARECKI, KOLSKY/I; Przedecz: PIFKO, PIWKO

In Search of Shneur ZALMAN #latvia

Marcella S

Hi
I have a brickwall with my husband's maternal grandfather's family
They came to South Africa where, I believe the last names were all
changed to Mayers, Schneiderman, Snider, Sniders
I am told the patriarch of this family was named Shneur Zalman (sp?)
and their home was Ilust near Darvipils Courland - although a set
of naturalization papers I have for one of the sons, Harry Mayers
indicates Liepaja as his place of birth.

Has anyone heard of Ilust?
Is anyone researching this family by some vague chance.
I'm not sure how or where to start looking since I am unable to find
any of the descendants in South Africa - one of them Leopold Snider
pops up on Google but I can't get any further.

Any comments, help would be great.
Thanks
Marcella Shames

Translation of Betzalel #general

Eric Svirskis

Dear Gayle,

Although it is my late father's name I can only tell you how it has been
"translated" in our experience: lis 1937 Lithuanian passport says Becalelis
which is also in his immigration documents into New Zealand. I think it was
too much for the colonies and he was generally known as Whisky or Roly. The
former, I can see, as a corruption of Svirskis but unsure about Roly though
as he was not overly rounded! BTW, in correspondence I later found, our U.K.
family called him Charlie. Bit closer, somehow!

It will be interesting to see what others have found it translated to!

Eric Svirskis,
Melbourne, Australia.

Interested in: FLEXER, GANTOVNIK, GESKIN, GROSSBEIN, MUSZKATBLAT, OKUN,
SRAGOWITZ, SVIRSKI, SVIRSKIS, or SWIRSKY, & ZILBERMAN, from: Belarus &
Lithuania: Adutiskis, Daniloviciai (now possibly Draustine?), Dolhinov,
Kovno/Kaunas, Melegan, Panevesz/Panecevysz, Shtayachisok, and Widze/Vidzy.

What name is Betzalel? in English

There was regular passenger service in the 1890s >from Libau (Leipaja)
to I believe Liverpool. I even know that ships left Libau outbound
to England on Mondays and Tuesdays. Unfortunately, I know this >from
historical sources and not >from genealogical ones.

I don't know how to get the passenger listings for these voyages
or anything else. Any thing you all discover please let me know.
