KRIS Family #poland

Feldman, Shelah <Shelah.Feldman@...>

Hello,
I need some help locating my maternal grandmother's (Sophia Kross
Kass) family. According to my mother they lived in Bialystok, she
believes in the actual city. She said when her mother came here the
last name sounded like Kris, but Sophia changed it to Kross. My mother
said Sophia's family was well off, that she believes there were 13
siblings, but not that many lived, and that her mother's father was a
Colonel in the Czar's army. Additionally, one of her mother's brothers
was a Rabbi.
Sophia came here approx. 1909 and then she brought over her two
sisters, Faye & Jean and their mother, Chaya Leah, came a few years
later. But their father & brother stayed because America wasn't
religious enough.
I am trying to find the original last name and what became of the
remaining family. ( I can't find my grandmother in Ellis Island, and she
did come through there). Their Hebrew names were Chaim Lev (at least
that's what is on my grandmother's headstone).
Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Shelah Feldman

An extract of the list Tom mentions is available on Jewishgen under http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Holocaust/0111_Munkasz.html

"Gabor Hirsch created the original Excel spreadsheet on the H-SIG website. The original data was obtained >from a website that is no longer active. Moshe Shavit transformed the information in the spreadsheet into JewishGen format. We thank both of them for their efforts."

To the archive databasis in different mails mentioned and several claimed because some unreadable characters, you have to chose the proper characterset and this is ISO-8859-1to get the information in the correct Hungarian way with accents etc.

Best regards
Gabor Hirsch

Mordechai RASSEINER-19th cent. #rabbinic

yoni and rivka benari <yrcdi@...>

In my ggreatuncle's diary he mentions a "relative of my mother" R'
Mordechai RUZHINER who lived during the first half of the 19th cent.

In Dr. Neil Rosenstein's "The Unbroken Chain" (1990 ed. page 542)
under the ELIAS family there appears a "wife of R.S. RABINOWITZ ,
son of Mordechai RASSEINER". Ther are no further details regarding
their children in the book. The above "wife" is a daughter of Gad
Asher ROKEACH and a grandaughter R. Dov Beirsh ELIAS.

If the two above Mordechai RASSEINER (RUZHINER) are the same I would
like to be in touch with his descendants to examine the possible
family connections we may have.

UKRAINE PROJECT PROPOSAL #ukraine

Much data was extracted for the Jewish Agricultural Colonies in the Ukraine
site http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/Colonies_of_Ukraine/

This material was obtained >from the Zaporozhe and Odessa archives, as well
as Lithuanian and Belarus archives which hold data about the families prior
to their settlement in the Ukraine.

Currently we do not have an active webmaster and are looking for a
volunteer.

I have offered all this material to the All Ukraine Database, but I do not
have the resources to key in the data.

Re: Communicating with family in Uruguay #latinamerica

Anita <asleuth@...>

I have relatives in Montevideo, my father's uncle and his family settled
there around 1926 and my father use to communicate with them in Yiddish and
Spanish over the years. They learned English and I have continued to keep
in contact with the grandchildren in English because my Spanish is not very
good. I was told by the family that they preferred to have me communicate
in English so that they could practice their English.

I may have found my aunt's family in Montevideo Uruguay I attempted to call
and with my very rudimentary Spanish I was able to speak very briefly. My
question is if any one has made contact with family did you hire a
translator?
