From Spain to Poland? #general

George

I was interviewing my mother's second cousin. She told me that our family
came >from Spain to Poland. She said her grandfather told her that they came
from Spain and settled in the Tatra Mountains in Poland. She also said that a
relative came to visit them in Poland in the early 1930's >from Spain. I
checked with another distant relative who also heard we came >from Spain. Does
it sound possible that a relative would visit Poland >from Spain in the 1930's
and be related and know they were related?

Siauliai Data #lithuania

David Aron <davidaron@...>

I received last week the records of the 1858 Revision List for the Siauliai
district. The records will find their way on to the web pages soon but I
received them in advance as a project sponsor. I also received last week
(it was a busy week!) the records for Uzventis for which I had agreed to do
some input work. Interestingly enough I discovered ARON family members
on both of those lists.

I had always assumed that my family had come >from Siauliai. Indeed this is
confirmed by Jeffrey Maynard's very useful description of Siauliai which
mentions my great grandfather Rabbi Bension Aharon Aron. His date of death
according to Maynard was 1860 which accords very much to the revision list
that I got directly >from the Vilnius archives in 1996.

I had always wondered whether my great grandfather had any other family
in Siauliai other than his wife and children. As I believe that it was the
Rabbi's duty to do registration I had always assumed that some other family
should have been listed. Looking at the data for the region made me realise
that I had made the assumption that our families never moved >from their
home shtetl. In reviewing the two lots of data that I received I realised that
this was not the case and that the family had originally come from
Uzventis. Uzventis is only about 20 miles away >from Siauliai In all I
discovered 10 family members including who I believe to be my gg
grandfather Leyb Aron.

The reason for mentioning this all is that it shows what a powerful tool is
being developed and how it is likely to help others. An important lesson is
that one should also consider shtetls in the area rather than just
concentrate on one as I had done.

I would suggest that others consider contributing to this project. The
amount of data available on our families is awesome. You should contact
your district coordinators for your shtetls. Checks (with the
notation "for Siauliai Project in the memo field") should be sent to:

1890 NY Immigrants from Austria, Poland, and Galicia #general

Howard Relles <rellesh@...>

I am preparing an index of immigrants into New York City during 1890 from
Austria, Poland, and Galicia (the immigrant's responses to a ship's
burser's) question of country of citizenship) while searching for my own
ancestors. I am about 30% of the way through the microfilms for that year
and have about 14,000 names thus far. For each person, I have their First
Name, Last Name and it's Soundex Code, NARA Microfilm Roll Number, Ship's
Name, Ship Number, Date of Arrival into NY, and the Line Number in the
ship's record.

Since no previous Soundex indices exist for this category, I would be happy
to share what I have so far with anyone searching for an ancestor who
immigrated >from those places in that year.

If you're interested, just email their first and last names and I'll email
back whatever information I have that corresponds to them.
Sincerely,
Dr. Howard M. Relles

Dr. Lev STEINHAUER and other STEINHAUER survivors of Vilna #lithuania

K.& L. Bertelsen <klb@...>

Dear fellow researchers,

from our research via the Vilnius Archives we know that one of my GGGM's
younger brothers, Lippman Steinhauer b.ca.1850, had children, one of whom
possibly was Josel, b.ca.1886 Vilna, who married Chena Mikla bat Berko
SNIPISHKIER, b.ca.1880.

The 1942 Vilna Ghetto List mentioned :
Jossel Steingauer (furniture master) born 7.9.1886 and his wife
Chienna Michla Steingauer born 10.11.1880
and their children
Dveira b.10.10.1926 ? (described as a "hygienist" on the Ghetto list)
Lev b. 10.2.1926 or 2.10.1926 ?
Genrietta b. 15.11.1912 or 11.11.1915 ?

were all registered as living at Ligonine St. 4-9 in the Ghetto.

There were several other SHTEINGAUER/STEINHAUER names listed as being in
the Ghetto in 1942, most, if not all, probably being related toour family.
Also there was a Moishe SNIPISHKIER b.1892 listed living at the same Ghetto
address as a Lipman STEINHAUER b. 1904 - who could have been another relative.

In the lists of known survivors of Vilna published in the book Lithuanian
Jewish Communities by Nancy and Stuart Schoenburg, there was a Dr. Lev
STEINHAUER, who possibly emigrated to Israel after the war with his wife
Lidia nee Glosky/Glusky Steinhauer.

I have also seen references to two other Steinhauer survivors :

Isaac STEINHAUER - who also possibly emigrated to Israel after the war and
Lipman-Sochor STEINHAUER - possibly emigrated to England/Italy? after the
war - he was described as a businessman/merchant/dealer.

Do any of these names ring any bells with anyone? TIA.
