GOLDENBERGER - GOLDMAN

On my late grandfather's military draft registration #68, issued by the
Yelisavetgrad Police Department in 1886, he is named Shimon Shmuel
GOLDENBERGER. His parents were Benjamin and Gerty GOLDENBERGER, both
subjects of Romania. On his British Naturalization certificate it states
that Shimon Shmuel GOLDENBERGER was born in Bucharest in 1859. >from
Bucharest he moved to Kirovograd, Ukraine before emigrating with his wife,
Simma Sarah (nee ZALATOROV), and their four children, Benjamin,Gerty,
Abraham, and Isaac, to Leeds, England, in about 1898, changing their
surname to GOLDMAN. Simon Shmuel GOLDENBERGER was the only member of his
immediate family to live in England. It is known that he had relatives
(probably siblings) who emigrated to U.S.A. Names and their whereabouts are
unknown.

I would like to receive any information on this GOLDENBERGER family.

Re: Two words, Serock Yizkor Book #poland

Howard,

both of theses words are obsolete Polish terms for a kindergarten. One
is "ochronka", which usually denoted a kindergarten ran by a religious
institution, and the other is "freblowka", denoting a more modern and
lay approach (after F. Frobl, a German pedagogue).

Best regards,

"Ochronka" is the Polish for a kindergarten. Same with "freblowka" - a
kindergarten organized according to the theories of the German educator
Friedrich Frobel. Both terms are archaic. The Russian "okhrana", the
security police, and the Polish "ochronka", are derived >from the same
root that is associated with protection.

from the Serock Yizkor Book chapter on The Modern Kheder (Jewish School)
" ... For younger children, >from the "Prebluvke" or the "Okhranke"
(department in Czarist Russian secret police) girls, a young, engaged
woman was hired. Each child had a small blackboard with a piece of
chalk to write, and each received a cup of cocoa and a roll each day.

When the children went for a walk with their teacher, they were all
dressed in blue and white aprons with white and blue braided hats made
from crepe paper, since there was no money for material and there were
no subsidies in those days for schools or for - Prebluvkes. The school
existed >from tuition that was paid, and not all parents had the
possibility to make uniforms for their children for the Prebluvke."

Can you help translate P(F)rebluvke and Okhranke?

Okhranke: komets alef, khof, reysh, komets alef, nun, kuf, ayin

ViewMate 20876 Epstein family in the US in the 1940's #belarus

Consensus says this photo is >from the US, probably in the 1940's. One
woman in the photo might be Lillian Epstein Struman, or not. Any of
you recognize anyone in the photo. Or any more helpful
comments/suggestions? This unlabeled photo was in my uncle's photos
after he died. Men in the photo look like my Epstein and Weiland
relatives. Lillian's relative said one of the women looked like her,
perhaps.

Family MENDEL Ortelsburg,East Prussia (now Szcztyno,Poland) #germany

Des Petersen <desandrudi@...>

Hello,
I have been researching the family of my out of marriage grandfather
Samuel MENDEL for about four years. The family also had roots in Neu
Keykuth (Trelkowo) and Samuel spent a number of years in Berlin in the
1920s and again in 1933 to 1939.

Inspite of fair amount of documented historical research, including new
additional I have found, I now feel I need new leads to go further. To
this end I would like to connect with anyone who may have information
on the MENDEL family and the Jewish community of Ortelsburg in
general. This could include non-Jewish families (in my case family
LUMMA). I myself am a "by product" of two cultures.

Pending any positive replies I can either post on GerSig or email
direct a list of key points of family MENDEL. Thank you

Rudi Petersen, Havelock North, New Zealand
