Jane Rosen Berenbeim

The Jewish Genealogical Society invites you to attend its next meeting,
featuring Ellen Cassedy, speaking on her new book, We Are Here: Memories
of the Lithuanian Holocaust.

JGS member and professional genealogist, Avrum Geller, on "1940 Census
Search Hints."

Center for Jewish History
15 West 16th Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues

Program
Ellen Cassedy set off into the Jewish heartland of Lithuania to study

the country's twentieth century history.

Ms. Cassedy has explored the world of the Holocaust in Lithuania, and her
Jewish roots there, for ten years. Her articles and translations have
appeared in The Forward, Hadassah, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Lilith,
Bridges, Shofar: an Interdisciplinary Journal of Jewish Studies, and
Pakn-treger.

She is a former columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News and the author
of two books for working women. A book-signing will follow the
presentation.

The Ackman & Ziff Family Genealogy Institute at the CJH will be open at

JRI-Poland introduces new tool to graphically follow families in the records of Poland #poland

Stanley Diamond

Jewish Records Indexing - Poland today announced the "Surname
Distribution Mapper" - a tool designed to help genealogy
researchers graphically understand where their family names first
appeared in the 19th century records and visualize how the family
spread throughout Poland by decades >from the early 1800s into the
first part of the 20th century.

Using modern mapping technology provided by Google Maps, the
Surname Distribution Mapper allows users to graphically display
their search results using a tree icon to indicate the number of
entries found for a surname in a town's vital and other records.

By running the cursor over each tree icon, a user can view a
popup window displaying the number of vital record entries found
in various towns in the JRI-Poland database. Clicking on the
balloon brings the user to the familiar JRI-Poland search results
for detailed viewing of a town's entries.

Additionally, and especially exciting for researchers, the
Surname Distribution Mapper can display results for specific
decades or in a "progressive mode," where tree icons appear
successively by decade to give the researcher an idea of the
movement of their family around Poland and the Western Ukraine.

"The Surname Distribution Mapper enables a researcher to
experience visually much of what we had only been able to do
conceptually," explained Robinn Magid, Lublin Archives Project
Coordinator and long-time JRI-Poland board member. "Our goal is
to quickly determine where a person should focus their research
energy to obtain results beyond what the family's oral history
might recollect."

"JRI-Poland database manager Michael Tobias has given us the gift
of highlighting migration patterns and spotlighting probable
'home bases' for families. The Surname mapper takes genealogy
search results to a new level," she said.

The JRI-Poland Surname Distribution Mapper is now live and can be
initiated >from the "search database" link on the JRI-Poland Home
Page at www.jri-poland.org

Visit www.jri-poland.org to read the announcement and begin using
this special feature.

Looking for connection between BERCOWITZ and KLEPPER / HAIMOWITZ / SIEGEL / LOBEL Iasi Families #romania

jdktfam@...

Greetings Genners!

I apologize for the length of this post but I felt I might as well put
it all out there. I have posted a large gathering picture >from April
1929 for the Confirmation Reception of Jacob BERKOWITZ to viewmate.
The link is as follows:

http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=22030

My Grandmother is 15 in this picture and has labeled many of my
KLEPPER and related family members. The information that I have found
searching Ancestry.com and NYC marriage records and based on a tree
Grandma and I did together around 1985 shows the children and
grandchildren of Herschel (aka Yedl who died in Iasi) and Minnie (aka
Anna/Dora/Menie) SELIG (parents Joseph SELIG and Anna WEISS >from her
death cert) both of Iasi. All of the them came here between 1901 and
1905.

Their known descendants are as follows (supposedly one child remained
in Iasi or died before they emigrated):

Jake KLEPPER married Eva LEHRMAN (daughter of Anna) and had children
Julius and Betty (married Robert ITZKOWITZ). I have made contact with
one of Julius' two sons and Betty had no children.

Dubrish (Dora) KLEPPER married Berl (Ben) HAIMOWITZ (HAIMOVICI of
Iasi) and had children Fannie (married Jack SIEGEL), Hyman and Edith.
I believe Edith may never have married and can't find Hyman. Jack and
Fannie had children Gloria and Paul/Percy. I haven't found any living
descendants of this line yet.

Beila (Beckie) KLEPPER married Jacob (Jankel) YANCOLOWITZ (JANKELOVICH
of Iasi) and had children Morris (appears as GOLDSTEIN in 1905 census
for some reason) and maybe Chaim or Abram (died within months of
arrival?). Morris married Zeta BLACK and had two sons, one of which I
can see is in NJ. They divorced and Morris remarried but had no more
children.

Clara married Marcus/Max LOBEL of Chicago and they had seven children
all but two of whom relocated to California. Bella married Philip
KIRSCHNER, Julius/Jimmy married Dorothy KING, Ben married Claire?,
Anne married Morton SMITH, Gabriel married Blanche?, Sol (a/k/a Frank)
married Evelyn? and Esther married Fred PAUL. I have found living
descendants of most of these people but Ben and Jimmy who stayed back
in NY. Ben was reported living in Roslyn and Jimmy was incarcerated
the last the family knew.

I did find a David BERCOWITZ with wife Rose (possibly maiden name
Ginsburg) and son Jacob of the right age in a census. He was from
Iasi and entered thru Buenos Aires and worked as a moving picture
operator. His parents were Harry (Hirsch) and Beckie and siblings
Clara Benjamin Anne and Bessie in the 1905 Census.

I also found a Fannie KLAPPER married a Sam BERCOWITZ on September 3,
1910 in Manhattan and a Dorothy WEISS married William BERKOWITZ on
November 14, 1915 in Manhattan. Those are possible familial
connections but I can't tie them to David and Rose or to my family.

If you have any info that could tie the BERKOWITZs to my family or any
info regarding any of these families OR can identify anyone else in
the picture, I would truly welcome hearing >from you. You can respond
to me directly or on the viewmate form.

Thanks for your indulgence and happy hunting to all!
