Re: GINSBURG/GINSBERG family search for 4 missing siblings #general

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

Just a note to remind researchers whether you are newbys or more advanced
that you should first clarify your search by doing some simple basic things
before posting to JewishGen:

1. Obtain the correct present name for the ancestral shtetl. As an
example, SHALOK is now known as SALAKAS.

2. Look in the Litvak SIG All-Lithuania Database. As an example, since
there are many listings for the name GINSBURG or GINZBURG, it is also
possible to look for the town of Salakas first and then see if there were
any family listed there.

You can plug in SALAKAS and then check the Town Exact Spelling feature in
the search engine. This search brings up all those who lived in Salakas
whose records are in the database.

In this particular case, in one of the types of records, the 1897 Census,
there is a leaseholder Baruch Ginzberg, age 30, born 1867, and his wife
Dveira, age 28, born 1865, and daughter Sora, age 4, born 1893, who were all
born in Novoaleksandrovsk, registered in Salakas and living in Skapiskis.

3. You can also look in the Ellis Island Database for information on those
you think came to America. This can be done by family name or place they
came from.

4. You can look on the SA SIG web site for information on the family in the
various databases there, http://www.jewishgen.org/safrica. In addition, you
can view South Africa family data on the SA Jewish Roots Bank located at:
http://grub.its.uct.ac.za/cgi/cgi_RootWeb.exe?entry_point=ArrivalList#.

By doing a little basic research on your own, it makes it easier for those
on the JewishGen digest to assist you.

Ohio help requested #general

jan meisels allen <janmallen@...>

I am researching an ancestor, Eliasz PERLO/PERLA that left his wife and
children in South Africa and moved to the United States. The only thing we
know is that he lived in Canton, Ohio. He died, May 26, 1953 at about age
83. We are guessing somewhere in Ohio. We have no knowledge if he ever
divorced his wife in South Africa, or remarried in the United States. Other
than trying to find a death certificate >from Ohio, does anyone have any
other suggestions about resources in and around Canton in the early 1950's
and 1940's that might be resourceful? We don't know when he left South
Africa for the US. He left his homeland of Poland to go to South Africa
about 1905 per his South African naturalization, with his wife and children
following him in 1910. Any suggestions of where to look or who to contact
in Canton would be appreciated.

Thank you

Galicia & Money - Stories Needed! #general

Pamela Weisberger <pweisberger@...>

The song goes: "Money makes the world go around...."

It's true today...as it was true well over a hundred years ago when our
relatives in Eastern Europe struggled to feed their families, fulfill the
obligation of Tzedakah, and scrape together enough funds to travel to
America in the pursuit of a better life.

I am working on a story for the spring issue of "The Galitzianer" having to
do with how our ancestors --living in Galicia in the 19th and early 20th
century--dealt with money...and need your help.

If you have documents or old records relating to Kahal dues, synagogue
donations, land ownership, travel (train and ship's passage tickets), food
prices, business records and salaries, school tuition, real estate
transactions, leisure activities (spas, hotels), library charges, bills--or
wills--anything relating to how money was spent and how much things cost and
types of currency used...including stories handed down through the
generations (specific to Galicia, of course) on this topic...please forward
them to me.

You can include your information in the body of the e-mail, or attach Word
documents or JPEG images.

(Please only send items that are not copyrighted and that you are willing to
provide permission for us to publish in "The Galitzianer.")

The entire book by Robin O'Neil, "Belzec: Prototype of the Final
Solution; Hitler's Answer to the Jewish Question," is now online at
http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/belzec1/belzec1.html. You will find
a forward and introduction,16 chapters with extensive footnotes,
appendices, a glossary, and an extensive bibliography. This
original work was contributed to JewishGen by Robin and the online
presentation was done by Lance Ackerfeld and Max Heffler.

Robin says of the focus of the books, " What follows is the
background of how this policy of genocide was conceived, put into
operation and staffed, and how the ordinary men involved were caught
up in one of the blackest moments in human history."

This is not an easy read, by any means, but the scholarship will add
immensely to our understanding of the Holocaust.
