SCHENKER records--Part 2 #belarus

Larry Schenker <lpsca@...>

Dear Sig members,

Any help and suggestions in the below matter will be greatly
appreciated.

I would like to locate and obtain a copy of the marriage record of my
grandparents.

My grandfather, Josef Schenker, was born someplace in Russia on August
9, 1992. His father's name was Israel Leon Schenker. His mother's name
was Pesse Wuback.
My grandmother, Ciwze (no maiden name know) was born between 1878 -
1882). On her death certificate it gave a birth place of Poland.

Josef and Ciwze were married between 1902 - 1903.

Two major facts are not very clear:
1. Where were they married?
Brestz-Litovski, Russia where their Ellis Island records indicate.
Also
the 1920 United States Federal Census records indicate that they
were
both born in Brestz-Litovski, Russia.
Or in
Minsk, Russia a town that has been mentioned as a possible marriage

site.
Pinsk, Russia another town that has been mentioned as a possible
marriage site.
2. What was my grandfather's Surname at birth and also at his marriage
and how was it spelled?
Surnames with the same Schenker Daitch-Mokotoff soundex are:
Cenzer, Cenzor, Junker Schanker, Schantzer, Schencker, Schmitzer,
Schniker, Schnitzer, Senzer, Shenker, Singer, Yanker Zanger, Zinger
or
Was their Surname really even Schenker. There has been some mention

by my father in the last year of his life, but never confirmed, that
his
father Josef's name was not Schenker but really Binembaum or
Tenenbaum (or some similarly sounding name). As the story goes,
Josef was a Russian dissident who had to escape >from the Tzar's
police and army during the uprisings and civil disturbances in the
early
1900's - and that before he left Russia in or about 1906 he changed
his
name >from Schenker to Binembaum or Tenenbaum. There are no
records here in the United States to indicate that this is anything
more
than a possible story.

Thanks again. Any help or suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Researching LEIMAN family #galicia

Aryeh Wanderman <kwander@...>

Subject: Researching LEIMAN family

I am trying to get information about my great-grandfather, Shraga Feivel
LEIMAN, who lived in Ropezyce ("Ropshitz"), Galicia. His daughter (my
grandmother), Rachel (Ratze) LEIMAN, came to America as a young girl around
1890, and married my grandfather, Abraham WANDERMAN, in 1896. The other
children of Shraga Feivel LEIMAN who also came to America were: Esther
LEIMAN (married name BERKOWITZ), Sophie LEIMAN (married name SCHARF), Sam
(Hebrew name Shimon?) LEIMAN , Rivka LEIMAN (married name Reiss). They all
lived in New York.

Does anyone have any information about Shraga Feivel LEIMAN, or any of his
descendants?

Also: I have been told that there was a LEIMAN family circle which was
active and had meetings in New York in the 1930's - 1940's. Does anyone
have any information about this family circle, and in particular, did any of
those named above participate?

Emigration from Galicia #galicia

Richard Cooper <ric@...>

Just catching up on my e-mails and I spotted the thread enquiring about
reasons for emigration >from Galicia 1890-1914. My grandmother's parents came
to Britain >from Dabrowa Tarnowska in 1887. She told me that several of her
mother's sisters died >from an epidemic - either diphtheria or cholera. And
if you look at the Tarnow death records you will see that several epidemics,
of cholera, diphtheria, typhoid and typhus, swept the area during the 1870s
and 1880s. So this could have had a cumulative effect of driving those who
were able to emigrate to healthier climes.
