My great uncle was Samuel Mordechai Weiner. Born in 1866 in
Shavel,Kovno Goberna, he moved to Minneapolis and married Emma Levine.
They had one son, Simon. In 1908 Samuel was killed in an accident, and
buried in Minneapolis Jewish Cemetary. Emma and Simon moved to Seattle
where Emma remarried. Simon went to work for the Seattle, Washington
Fire Department. Simon married a woman by the name of Jessie and they
had two daughters, Marion and Betty. Emma died in 1942 and Simon retired
from the Seattle Fire Department and moved to California. I have not
been able to find the two daughters and I would like to make contact
with them.

Can it be Olkusz? #poland

Linda Shefler <linsilv@...>

I am again in need of some helpful input. I had a military document of an
ancestor translated and am wondering if others come to the same conclusion
that I have. The document was issued in 1880 and translated as the
following:

Gubernia: Keletskoy (Krenetc)
Uyezd: Sipusheny? Onpushsky? Olpushena?
City: Oipusha? Onpusha? Olpusha?

I've concluded that it was the City of Olkusz in Opulski Uyezd and Kielce
Gubernia.

Does anyone have any other suggestions or would you come to the same
conclusion?

As usual, I thank you very much in advance for your help.

Have a lovely week.

Hello Mark,

Here goes a translation of the BENN expo webpage. :

***
from the 6th to the 13th October 2005 "BIBLE NEUILLY" [organisation
that links Jewish and Christian communities of Neuilly] presented, in
partnership with the city of Neuilly sur Seine [and the organisation
"Les Amis de Benn et Ghera"]

BENN=
EXPOSITION : 29 paintings inspired by psalms

Benn was a painter of Russian origin. He came to Paris in 1930 and
joined the "School of Paris", which was made up of foreign painters
(Chagall, Soutine, Kisling, Modigliani...), notably Jews fleeing
persecution. It is while hidden during the occupation years that he
had his first "visions" of psalms.

The painter Benn transcends appearance. He brings out the sense of
psalmist verses and brings us along with a flap of a wing... or a
stroke of a brush... towards mystery.

Nearly 1500 visiteurs (including 833 schoolchildren who enjoyed specific
activities) could discover or rediscover the work of the painter Benn
thanks to these 29 illustrated psalms.

Israel Genealogical Society - Negev Branch meeting *Thursday*, 1 December 2005 #general

Martha LEV-ZION <martha@...>

Shalom, Chaverim! We have been so busy with the Yom Iyun that I
almost forgot to send out a reminder about our December meeting. We
have changed the day, for this one meeting, to Thursday, 1 December
2005, so we could accommodate our exciting speaker, who is coming
from the USA.
Karen Franklin's talk will be in English:
"Solving the Mystery of the Cane Handle: Utilizing the Collection
of the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives for
Family History Research"

Karen S. Franklin creates a web of intrigue as she describes how she
utilized documents >from the Archives and other resources to
reconstruct the Brylawski family history and trace the meaning of a
cane handle she purchased at auction for William Wolf of Washington,
DC. The cane handle was given in honor of Wolf's ancestor, Julius A.

Brylawski in 1886 for service to his synagogue, Anshe Emeth of
Philadelphia (the congregation was dissolved in 1893). Also featured
in this powerpoint lecture will be other documents found in
connection with the research, including correspondence with Senator
Barry Goldwater describing gambling debts >from their 19th century
mutual ancestors. In her lecture, Karen Franklin will guide you
through different and unusual resources that might aid you in your
research for family in the USA.

You won't want to miss this program! Karen is director of the Family
Research department of the Leo Baeck Institute, which is located in
the Center for Jewish Studies in New York [a good thing to know
about if you intend to attend the NYC Conference in August!]; and is
also on the board of directors of Jewishgen. You will be able to ask
for any explanations or give any comments you may wish about these
places at this time as well.

This is a unique opportunity for all of us!

Time: 20:00 [There will be no early opening for the library on
this day]

Place: Kehilat Magen Avraham
Corner of Rehov Ad-Ad and Rehov Margalit
Omer

Phones for further details or questions:
Martha Lev-Zion - 6460494
Shirley Rosen - 6422589

Anytime you want to see what lectures are being given around the
country, you can always log onto the IGS website:

Hope to see you tomorrow at the Yom Iyun at Beit Hatefutzot!

Hello Again ~

Along with the pictures I posted in the hope that someone will recognize
some of my mystery relatives, I also need help with a simple Yiddish
translation. It is on the reverse side of a photograph of Itchak Rozenblat
taken in Modena, Italy in 1947. I assume he was on his way to Israel.

It is VM7138 and can be accessed directly:
