JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Samson LOWENSTARK {Umlaut o] born in 1787 was married Ester EYLENBERG; their identified children were: 1.Keile Freidel - born 2.3 1807 - married Aron PRAGER in 1833 - died 1838. Schiendel - 1811 2. Jakob Salomon abt 1814; London Dentist - 2 PRAGER live with him, probably the grandchildren of his sister Keile. By 1881 there are 8 children - only two boys. One daughter Pauline identified as a widow in 1901 - see below. 3. Abraham David abt 1818; London Jeweller at 210 Strand - two sons. One daughter Selina. Abraham died in 1884. Abraham arrived in England between 1841 and 1851. Wife Sarah is English-born. In the 1851 census he had a large family, but I suspect many of the children died young. Marcus D, designated as his only son. went to Rhodesia. 4. Marcus abt 1819 - ? 5. Ezechiel abt 1821; London - Jeweller - lived in Leicester Square - married London-born Rachel ABRAHAMS; no children as far as I can see. He can be seen in the 1861 census as Ezekiel LOEWENSTOCK - a journeyman jeweller - living with his in-laws. Perhaps he was not as successful as his brother, Abraham. Ezechiel died in 1895. 6. probably Jozef abt 1824 I suspect the father, Samson [dob - 1788 Krakow] later comes to England as a widower and lives with his family, namely his son-in-law and daughter {Miriam SYMONS} [1861 census]. He dies in 1866. The dates do not quite fit - so perhaps Samson married twice and had a younger daughter Miriam born in 1834? Abraham David's son, Marcus David was born in 1850. He married Marion, daughter of Henry Israel SAMUEL and Rachel WOLFE, on 6 April 1875 at Western Synagogue. MD LOEWENSTARK and Marion emigrated to South Africa, settled in Bulawayo where MD was an active freemason. He died in Hampshire in 1908. His two sons emigrated to the USA where they died. His three daughters married and stayed in S. Africa. Pauline LOWENSTARK, daughter of Jakob, the dentist can be seen as DELCAMBRE widow - musician in the 1901 census [husband was Charles DELCAMBRE]. No children I wonder if the family name LOWENSTARK/LOEWENSTARK >from this single Krakow branch has now died out because there were so many daughters? I have not followed the line of MD LOWENSTARK's two sons [see footnote] in the USA, nor the marriages of the many daughters. There could be male LO{E}WENSTARK descendants in the USA. I fully expected to see LOWENSTARK living in Vienna as many Krakow families settled there but so far, I have not found any traces. There are four pages of testimony on yad vashem to LOWENSTARK >from Lemberg [Lwow] and Tarnopol. This may be a branch of the same family. It appears to be a rare name. You can see many LOEWENSTARK medals etc on-line and one is being auctioned on the 10th July! There is an interesting Sir Moses MONTEFIORE centenary medal too, which was auctioned a few years ago. Emma Lefevre (#50185) has registered a search for the Krakow branch on the JGFF. I will contact her. There is not a single message in the Jewishgen message archives about this family. OSCAR SENATOR LIPMAN - LYTHAM ST. ANNES.

Nigel Wilson <wilsonettes@...>
Dear friends,
Seeking information on Oscar SENATOR LIPMAN and his wife Florrie nee CAVERSON - she was originally >from Leeds, and their descendants. Oscar son of Henoch and Gittel (Gertrude) Lipman - Gateshead / Newcastle-upon-Tyne - became engaged to Florrie in April 1937. They lived in Lytham St. Annes and believed to have had 3 or 4 children. Oscar was in the printing business and is thought to have died about 15 years ago. Can anyone inform me of a cemetery in the St. Annes area that has a Jewish section that maybe I could find Oscar and Florrie buried? Any information on this family gratefully appreciated, please respond privately.. Thank you. Patricia Wilson (Israel)

Research in the UK - Outbound Passenger Lists - re: Emanuel Prince
#unitedkingdom
jeremy frankel
When I first posted my enquiry, I didn't want to list everything I
had done (this is something I have been researching for a number of years now), so I replied more fully to everyone who wrote to me off list. So a big thank you to everyone who did respond. Yes, I was aware of both the Sackman and Prince families in the 1901 UK Censuses, which took place in April. The marriage took place in July. Both bride and groom were living at home with their respective parents and siblings. Emanuel had been born in London in 1875 to an English-born mother (my oldest English-born relative) and a Krakow-born father. Hence I don't think there were any accent problems or issues regarding his name (spelling, Hebrew variants, etc). However, after emigrating to the USA Emanuel did change his name to Edward and so, yes, he can be found in the US World War One Draft Registration lists. Furthermore, a number of Sarah's siblings had been born in New York, so the family was familiar with ship travel and New York specifically. At the time of the 1901 UK census, her father was living in New York, hence the reason why the mother was described as married but no husband to be found. I believe I have a full print out of the SS St. Paul manifest and have scrutinized it thoroughly and cannot find a couple, or two people listed separately who might match Emanuel and Sarah. I have no reason to believe that Emanuel lied on his naturalization documents as everything else passes muster. This is still one my life's biggest mysteries! -- Jeremy G Frankel ex Edgware, London, England Berkeley, California, USA EBIN: Russia, New York, USA FRANKEL: Poland, London, England GOLDRATH/GOLD: Praszka, Poland, London, England KOENIGSBERG: Vilkaviskis, Lithuania, London, England, NYC, NY, USA LEVY (later LEADER): Kalisz, Poland, London, England PRINCZ/PRINCE: Krakow, Poland, London, England, NYC, NY, USA
