On Mount Zion cemetery in Queens, NY there is a section reserved for the
'Independent Order of the Free sons of Judah'.

There is a relative buried there >from a family who came >from
Lithuania/Poland to America.

Anyone know what this burial society refers to?

Heartbreak and Hope: Stories of Ellis Island is available at

Obtaining Petition for Naturalization Records in New Jersey #general

I am trying to obtain the original papers filed by my grandfather, Max SHECHTMAN
who arrived in New York on 18 July 1904 aboard the S. S. St. Louis under the name
of Chaim SHECHTMAN. He lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with my grandmother, Sadie
and his two children, my father, Abraham and daughter, Sara until 1923. They then
settled in Garfield, New Jersey. I have a copy of his actual Naturalization
Certificate which was issued on 08 May 1925 by the Court of Bergen County in
Hackensack, NJ. which includes the certificate number, Petition Volume and Number.
The typed name on the certificate is: Max STECHTMAN. As far as I know our surname
was never spelled that way. I believe that this is a typo error.

I'm hoping that someone reading this posting can direct me to the right location
where I may obtain my grandfather's original papers for naturalization. I'm hoping
to find more information that may include the date and where he and my grandmother
were married. I have no information as to where they were married or when. I do
know that as of 1922 women were not naturalized through their husband's
naturalization.

Please, respond privately unless there is information that will be helpful
to this general listing.

I contacted the Lithuanian State Historical Archives last week using the email
address on their website. (I simply googled Lithuanian State Archives. They have a
great website with email addresses for the Lithuanian archives in Vilna, the state
historical archives, and the Kaunas archives, as well as providing information
about what is in each archive. The entire website can be accessed in English. )
This morning I received a reply, with a request for payment along with payment
instructions for a wire transfer. Since my bank will not send to Lithuania any
more, I simply went to Western Union online and requested that money be transferred
to their bank account, as per the Lithuanian archives' instructions. The fee for
Western Union was $5. It took less than 5 minutes and I paid by credit card.
Last year, I contacted the Kaunas archives about 3 Internal Passports and received
25 pages of information >from them (all digitally, so it was very quick). They not
only sent the passports (with pictures), but all of the supporting documentation -
it was a goldmine! All of my communications with the archives' employees has been
in English; the documents, of course, are in Lithuanian. Fortunately, I was able to
get them translated easily. You shouldn't need an intermediary, just a computer.

In early October I posted on this Forum about a then-upcoming exhibit at
the US National Archives on Iraqi Artifacts, "Discovery and Recovery:
Preserving Iraqi Jewish Heritage. The artifacts were found ten years ago by
US forces in the basement of Saddam Hussein's headquarters and were taken to
the US for conservation which took years. Due to the US government
shutdown earlier this month the exhibit opening was delayed. The exhibit
will now open November 8 and will run through January 5, 2014. For more
