Anyone going to Poland in near future? #poland

Stanley Diamond

Dear friends of JRI-Poland:

Jewish Records Indexing - Poland has another camera and lens
needed by our team in Poland for making scans of special record
collections.

If you live in the U.S. and are going to Poland in the near future,
we hope you will consider volunteering to bring the camera and lens.
You will be met by our representative at your hotel so the handover
will be very simple.

Please let us know as soon as possible and we'll send the equipment
to you.

"From Stakliskes".... for how long? #lithuania

Steve Adelson <sjadelson@...>

My family came to Jonava >from Stakliskes. ">from 1845" said one record on
the 1858 revision in Jonava. They lived there until at least 1890, and then
my g-grandfather was in Vilnius by 1914. But, even on the 1914 birth record
of my grandfather, it says "Family >from Stakliskes". What's the explanation
here?

Thanks,
Steve Adelson

A funny story on the Vilnius City Records #lithuania

Steve Adelson <sjadelson@...>

Interesting story I thought you might enjoy..

My grandfather was born in Vilnius in 1914. He didn't know his exact
birthday, but when he married my grandmother - who was born 7 Sept - he
decided that his birthday would be exactly one month before hers, 7 Aug.

I recently joined the Vilnius District Research Group (DRG), and looking
through the birth records, found my grandfather. His true birthday?
7 Aug 1914. At least on the Julian calendar.

I also found the name of my gg-grandfather (my grandfather's mother's
father), as well as my g-grandfather's brother, wife, and two children. I'm
looking forward to finding out more as other early 20th century records are
translated. I'm very pleased with what I've found in the Vilnius District
Research Group files!

Best,
Steve Adelson

Funny addresses in Wuerzburg ? #germany

Vivi Cohen <vivisilco@...>

Dear Gersiggers,

Thanks to all for sharing your knowledge about German genealogy, I am
always learning new things.

My father, Walter SILBERMANN, was born and lived in Wuerzburg, Bavaria
I kept old documents, among them a card addressed to him to the
address: Sartoriusstr. 1/2. I also found in the Wuerzburg database
other addresses that include the number 1/2 or "a.o.". Does someone
know what this means? Some years ago I visited the street but all the
buildings were built after the war and the numbering is "normal".

Thanks. Vivian (Silbermann) Cohen Mevaseret Zion, Israel <vivisilco@gmail.com>

Sephardic Ashkenazi relations #general

Aubrey Jacobus <aajacobus@...>

I have an example of a boy barmitzvah in a Sephardic Shul whose
parents were married Ashkenazi ( 1916 Edinburgh) and appear to
have no Sephardic connections - father was Romanian ( HERSHCOVICI )
How uncommon is this ?

Sorry, I was unable to make out any more than you already have.

But you might have more luck if you download the image itself and post
that on Viewmate (or anywhere else that can be viewed publicly). The
link you posted requires you to be logged into Ancestry to view,
limiting the number of people who can help you.

Polish records pre 1820-ish #general

Dovie Gelerinter

It's been a while since I've been able to devote any time really to my
tree but I'm getting back into it and am reminded of some brick walls
I seemed to hit pre 1820 or so in regards to being able to find any
records. The earliest record I have is a marriage record >from about
1849 and, >from that, I've been able to deduce my GGGGF's rough birth
year and his parents' names, but have not been able to nail anything
down.

Any tips on finding earlier Polish records?

Thanks!

Dovie Gelerinter
