Sad news indeed. Last week, both Yakov Bunka in Plunge and Boris Steinas in
Siauliai passed away. Yakov Bunka was the last remaining Jew in Plunge and
did many things to honor and keep alive the memory of the Jewish
communities in Plunge and the surrounding towns.

Boris Steinas was the Chairman of the Siauliai Jewish Community and a real
leader and pillar of the Jewish community. About 200 Jews live in Siauliai
today and they have lost an exceptional leader.

May both their souls rest in peace.

Howard Margol

Illegal to Bury Jews in Pittsburgh Proper? #general

Varda Meyers Epstein <yknowus@...>

A family member told me it was once illegal for Jews to be buried in
Pittsburgh and that this is currently a huge issue among Pittsburgh
genealogists.

Truth or rumor?

Google turns up nada. It is true that the vast majority of area Jewish
cemeteries are outside the city limits. There are currently only two
cemeteries in Pittsburgh with sections for Jewish burials. These were
non-Jewish cemeteries that opened these Jewish sections within the
past quarter of a century.

The British WOLFSON Family #general

Amit N

Hello,

I am requesting help in affirming a family story I have no other evidence
regarding it, but this story.

The basis of this story is a wedding of apparently a cousin of my
great-grandmother, to a member of the British WOLFSON family in Manchester.
The surname of this girl was probably GOLDSZTAJN (perhaps appears as GOLDSTEIN
if anglicized), and her family was based in Kutno, Poland. I don't have
further information - I don't know the girl's first name or the name of her
father. I don't know which member of the WOLFSON family was that. I only know
this last name and the mention of the famous WOLFSON family, specifically >from
Manchester.

The story adds some poetical elements such as that this WOLFSON passed in
Kutno in a train, saw the girl and immediately fell in love with her, or the
fact that her father attending the marriage was probably the first man in the
family to visit UK, but all of that is of course just fun additions.

I believe the time frame for this story is somewhere between 1900-1930, more
probably 1910-1930's. Unfortunately I didn't manage to find anything that fits
my knowledge in the JewishGen UK Database.

So, practically, my question is whether any of you genners, might know
anything about a British WOLFSON boy marrying a Polish girl? Can anyone perhaps
direct me to a family tree of the famous WOLFSON family? I would very much
appreciate any information or advice regarding where to look, and maybe with
any luck, I would be able to locate some relatives as well.

Thank you in advance,
Amit Naor

Moshe SHEFER of Palestine #general

I found Moshe SHEFER on the IGS website:
*Moshe SHEFER,Change of Names in the Palestine Gazette 1921-1948*

How can I learn what his surname was originally?
He served in the British Army in Palestine. Would Israel have his
service record or would England?
Please respond privately. Thank you.

Dr. Berthold LINDER of Israel #general

Ann Linder

I found a 1955 Tel Aviv census listing for Berthold LINDER, listing his
occupation as Doctor. The address noted is *Eisenberg's House, Neve Bezalel,
Jerusalem*

Berthold is somehow related to Sarah Z. LINDER, a dentist who in 1946 was at
* Levontin Str, Tel Aviv. I do not know who Berthold was.

Does anyone have a connection? Was Berthold Sarah's son?

Berthold doesn't seem to be a Jewish name--might anyone know the origins of
this given name? Sarah LINDER was >from Poland, as was her husband.

Thanks in advance for any info you can offer--please respond privately.

Beth David Cemetery Records #general

Nancy Levin

Hello All -

I am researching some people who are buried in the Beth David Cemetery in
Elmont, New York. I already have photographs of the gravestones (they sent
them to me) but need to get copies of any burial records they might have for
these individuals. (Documents, death certificates, etc.)

Has anyone obtained this information >from the Beth David cemetery office?
(These are burials >from 1932 and the 1950s.)

I can get authorization >from the direct descendants but before I go this route,
I want to find out what they are or are not willing to give out.

Thank you.

Records related to Cuban Jewish community #general

Dear Genners,

I'm doing some research for a friend who was born in Cuba and whose parents
immigrated there >from Poland, probably in the 1930s. Are records related to
immigration to and >from Cuba available? What about information such as birth,
marriage, and death records that occurred there during the 20th century?

Many thanks.

Have you searched the city clerk records at the Municipal Archives on Chambers
St., NYC? These records are not online. They have been discussed on this
