Zadroze Records #poland

Joshua Skarf <jskarf@...>

I did a Google search for the last names of my gggg grandparents,
Rozenfrucht and Mayland, who were >from Wolbrom. One of the sites that came
up was http://www.geneteka.genealodzy.pl/ which had a marriage record for
them which, to my surprise does not appear in the JRI database. The record
is >from 1818 >from the town of Zadroze.

Looking on a map, Zadroze is east of Olkusz and south of Wolbrom. If you
search for in the the shtetl finder, nothing comes up, although you can see
it in the Gazeteer.

So I am wondering
1) Does anyone else have relatives that come >from this town, or know
anything about it?

2) Why would these records not appear as part of the JRI database?
Perhaps they are included in the records of Wolbrom?

Thanks,

Josh Skarf

Rakeshik (Rokiskis) Landsmanschaft #lithuania

Jules Feldman

In the years 1912 until 1954 (and possibly after that) there was a very
active Rakeshik Landsmanschaft in Johannesburg.

Does anyone in this forum know of Rakeshik Landsmanschaften in other places
in the world?

Thanks,

Hi, Elaine,

Yes, several FHL microfilms of vital records >from these towns are on our
project list. Your willingness to work on them has pushed them up to top
priority. I'll send you a separate email with more information and
instructions on how to get image files >from the films.

Thanks for volunteering.

I noted that both Zhashkov and Mariupol have FHL records listed on
the town sites. I'm not sure what state they are in. If I can help
with scanning, please let me know. I live near the Oakland FHL.

Vital records acquisition #ukraine

Harvey Kabaker <ukrainesig.images@...>

To my colleagues researching family history in Ukraine,

Below is our list of the top 10 Ukrainian towns, ranked by the number of
researchers who registered in the JewishGen Family Finder and declared
their towns of interest.

As we scan microfilms >from the LDS Family History Library to collect
digital images of historical records of births, marriages, divorces and
deaths, we have given these towns priority attention. Because some
microfilms for larger towns also contain records for smaller towns in
the same district, we now have records for about 48 towns altogether.

Another factor is that several volunteers have been scanning records
from towns in which they are most interested, regardless of rank.
Eventually, of course, translators will review the records and extract
their data for public access through the JewishGen Ukraine Database.
That work is under way, and volunteers continue to scan microfilms of
Jewish vital records.
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Ukraine/

By the way, projects like this suggest why it's important to list your
families in the JewishGen Family Finder. If you haven't registered, you
may do so here:
http://www.jewishgen.org/jgff/

The Top 10 Towns
For those marked (complete), we have scanned all vital records available
on FHL microfilms.

Rank, Town, Uezd, Guberniya
1. Burty, Cherkassy, Cherkassy (complete)
2. Chernigov, Chernigov, Chernigov
3. Uman, Uman, Cherkassy
4. Korsun, Kanev, Kiev (complete)
5. Berezna, Chernigov, Chernigov
6. Nikolaev, Kherson, Kherson
7. Leski, Cherkassy, Cherkassy
8. Kerch, Kerch, Taurida
9. Kremenets, Kremenets, Volhnyia (complete)
10. Chigirin, Chigirin, Kiev (complete)

Details about projects under way for these and other towns are on the
Ukraine SIG Internet site here:
http://www.jewishgen.org/Ukraine/GEO_townlist.asp

Please look during the days ahead in this forum for more information
about the vital records acquisition project, and for suggestions on how
you can help.

general grave-finding help (not specific to Ukraine) #ukraine

guy.f.levin@...

Shalom,

My ggf is buried somewhere in the SW Philadelphia suburbs, and my Dad
and I have called numerous area cemetery offices asking if my ggf is
buried there, but they do not see him in their databases.

I know this is the Ukraine SIG forum, but maybe you experienced
genealogy researchers can please help me - or direct me to a helpful
email forum.

E.g., what other sources, like official documents, could I check? I'm
sure that the "where is s/he buried" question is an oft-asked one.

Thanks for your time!

Guy Levin,
formerly of Philadelphia (4th generation)
now in Baltimore
