Some of the recent postings have been about the grim side of the story the
Yizkor books tell, so for this week, a little something different.
This excerpt (http://bit.ly/2byXQaD) is >from the Yizkor book of Brzezin
(or Brzeziny) in Poland, about 13 miles east of Lodz and about 70 miles
west of Warsaw. The Jewish population numbered almost 4,000 in 1897 when
it was still part of Russia. This chapter by Abe Rosenberg describes
another slice of shtetl life: how Jewish sports came to Brzezin.

My grandparents Wolf (later William) and Esther (nee Finkle) Lubarsky and two of their children came to the US in 1906 >from Odessa. There is a record of a Wolf-Chaim Markusovich Lubarskiy living in Odessa which may very well be him. In Hebrew his name was Chaim Ze'ev. His father was Moshe Tzvi which seems to go with a Moise Yankelovich Luybarsky who was living in Odessa at the same time. However there doesn't seem to be any trace of his family; his wife, his daughter Chaike, or his son Joseph. They lived in Odessa for at least five years, but they were not originally >from Odessa. My grandfather's birthplace is given variously as Bircza on his ship ticket, and 'Bushitz Ukraine' on his naturalization papers, while my grandmother gives 'Deditchoff', Russia as her birthplace. With the government paperwork mangling their birthplaces I don't know where to look further.

Could Wlodooko be Wlodawa or Wlodawka (two different places nearby) Poland, which would have been Russia prior to 1918?

I suggest that the town name might be Volodarka, also spelled as
Wolodarka. It's in the Kiev region, just southwest of Belaya Tserkov.

p.s. Slavuta, Ukraine, is transliterated >from Yiddish as Slavita.

I am searching for information on members of a Berger family who in
1938-1942 said they were >from Koritna, Slovakia or Korytna or Karitna,
Czechoslovakia. Is this town (i) Korytn=C3=A1, a village and municipality
in Uherske Hradiste District in the Zlin Region of the Czech Republic.
(Wikipedia), (ii) Koritno, Vag-Ujhely, Nyitra. (JewishGen Hungary
Database), or (iii) somewhere else? Are all of these the same place?
And most importantly, where should I look for records on these people.

I would be very grateful for any information you could offer on the

Hello, I am hoping someone can help me locate information about my
distant cousin Isidor GROSS. He was born in Bingen, Germany in
September, 1873, and he immigrated to Brazil in about 1938. One
unsourced tree on Ancestry says he died in Petropolis, but provides no
date of death.

His wife was Klara Emrich, and they had a son Hans Bernard Gross, who
was born in Bingen in 1903 and, according to the same tree, died in
Rio de Janeiro in 1979. (He was a first cousin to Bernhard Gross, the
well-known physicist who had immigrated to Brazil in 1933.)

I have emailed the AHJB website. Is there anywhere else I should
search? Is there a particular synagogue or cemetery where German
Jewish immigrants might have belonged?

Hello, I am hoping someone can help me locate information about my
distant cousin Isidor GROSS. He was born in Bingen, Germany in
