"X" by respondents name in the census #general

Alyssa Freeman

Hi, All -
Has anyone run across a census for a relative with an "X" by
their name? Does anyone know what that means? I have a relative who
died in 1936 but shows up in the 1940 census with an "X" by her name.
her husband and children don't have the X's. How can she be in the
census?

Do you have any information about Mendel Leaufer born January 14, 1898 in
Kichineff and having lived 31 Rue de Paris in Clichy la Garenne in France?
He was flutist at the conservatory of Jassy before immigrating to France and
would have been a composer of films also.

Do you know the descendants of this man except his son Lucien?

Akiber EGER birthday #general

The Austrian Jewish Museum in Eisenstadt made a new hot announcement!

Sensational discovery! The Torah wimpel for the famous Rabbi Akiba Eger - we
can ultimately prove that he was born on 1 Cheshvan 522 = 29 October 1761
(and **not** as most sources claim on 8 November).

His brother Samuel was not born in 1755, but - as we reed in the Pinkas MILA
(circumcision register, Mohel book) - in 1762!

Just to add a few more [possibilities that I discovered for my great
grandfather Berek Wolf (birth certificate in Russia/Poland), Dov Ber (On
tombstone), Barnett/Barnet(How we knew him), Bernard (Census), Barnard
(Census), Barney (On business card and listed as such at the cemetary).

It might switch to Beryl, Barnett, Bernard, Barnard, as my Ber did. My Ber's
Hebrew name was Dov Ber, so he also used variations for Dov.

I have an Ellis Island manifest showing Ber SARAPIN arriving in 1913 from
Gorodok, Russia. He apparently went to my grandfather, Charles SARAPIN.

I can find no other record for this person.

What name might "BER" have been transformed to?

KRIEGER FROM RAMYGALA/KREKANOVA #lithuania

mkaplan27

I have been trying for several years to find a Lithuanian document linking
any two of my KRIEGER relatives.

Bertha KRIEGER (aka Ester) was born in 1885 in Ramygala. She had two
brothers, Harry and Morris. Her parents were Muse and Yakov.

I have records showing the two brothers and the sister living in New Jersey,
and Bertha's tombstone gave me the names of her parents, Yakov and Muse.

But nothing connecting any of these people in Panevezys district.

I'm about to give up...any help would be much appreciated.

L'shana tova.

Given name ending in "owna" #lithuania

Hello !

I have a record for a female ancestor named Eiga Mendelowna MARNAK. I am
unfamiliar with the female given name "Mendelowna," and wonder if in
this case it might mean her father's name was Mendel.

Thanks very much,

MODERATOR'S NOTE: You are correct that "owna" means daughter
of the name immediately preceding it, i.e. Mendel.
