JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

ROTHENBERG family (and variant spellings)
#general
MikePnina Rothenberg <mikeroth@...>
Hi,
I'm trying to locate information about a branch of my ROTHENBERG family that lived in England. My grandfather, Meyer ROTHENBERG, went from Ukraine to London around 1900, where his paternal uncle, Berril ROTHENBERG, lived. Berril had a son Arthur and four daughters, including one, Eva, who married a Harry ENGLANDER. Another daughter supposedly married another ENGLANDER. My grandfather married my grandmother, Amelia (Millie) RINKOWSKY in London, had four sons there and came to the U.S in 1908. They then had their last child, Rose. It is possible that some, or all, of the English branch emigrated. My ROTHENBERG family is Levi. My grandfather was born in Zhitomir, and his family later moved to Odessa. His father's name was Elias Benjamin and he preceded my grandfather to the U.S. My grandfather had a sister ROSE (married to Abe KOLODENKO). They also emigrated to the U.S. My grandfather also had a brother (name unkown) who apparently remained in Russia.. Any information or suggestions you can provide about the ROTHENBERG family >from England would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Mike Rothenberg mikeroth@...

MikePnina Rothenberg <mikeroth@...>
Hi,
I am trying to locate information about my STOCKHAMER family >from Rawa Ruska (was eastern Galicia, southeastern Poland, and now Rava Russkaya, Ukraine, a bit west of Lviv). I've located a branch of the family from the town that I hadn't known about, and am trying to learn how the two branches are related. I know there are birth records for the town in the AGAD Archive in Warsaw, going back to at least the 1840's. Does anyone know about other records and their locations that might shed some light on how the branches are related? Or birth records going back further than the 1840's? Does anyone know any STOCKHAMERs who might be from the town, or come upon any records about the family? Both branches are Cohens. Thank you. Mike Rothenberg mikeroth@...

Dear Fellow Researchers
Please could someone help me to locate the Descendants, of two of my Ancestors, who remain unknown to me.. Firstly:- SAM ISAACS, previously known as SZMUL JEZIOROWSKI - USA Sam left CZESTOCHOWA, in Poland/Russia in 1890 for the USA and eventually settled in CHICAGO, Illinois. He was in contact with his Main Family, Parents ISAAC and LAJA and Siblings, GOLDA, ESTHER, SOPHIE, SOLOMON, ABRAHAM, who also left CZESTOCHOWA (in 1894) and they settled in London, England. SAM was in contact with his Family in England up until 1933, when his Sister-in-law, Celia, to whom he was writing, died. I have tried without success to find any known whereabouts of this Man, who apparently, like his Main Family, changed his surname >from JEZIOROWSKI to ISAACS but might have continued being known as Sam JEZIOROWSKI, on records. I have sought both ISAACS and JEZIOROWSKI. Secondly:- BELLA FISCHLER BELLA left London England as a GI, and went to live in CANADA. Possibly after WW11. I believe it was TORONTO. BELLA and her Husband had a SON LARRY, both BELLA and LARRY still live in TORONTO. BELLA is the Daughter of SOPHIE FISCHLER, of London.. BELLA'S Siblings were SYDNEY who died after WW11 >from his injuries sustained during the War. LILY died in 2000. PAMELA lives in Bournemouth, England. BELLA'S Mother SOPHIE, was the Sister of the above, SAM JEZIOROWSKI/ISAACS If anyone knows of a BELLA or LARRY that fits this descriptions, I should be so happy to hear >from you. I am confused.
1) Does writing to the INS for the records they have about Alien Registration Cards provide different or better information that what one obtains >from the 3 naturalization papers? Re: origin of name Maimon
#general
Jeff Malka <malkajef@...>
Maimonides actual Hebrew name was Moshe ben Asher.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
At the period when he lived in Spain, arabic was the languagew of the Intellectuals and educated people. Asher means "fortunate" in Hebrew and could therefore be translated as Maimon which means fortunate in Arabic. Thus Moshe ben Asher became Moshe ben Maimon or Ibn Maimon. The suffix "-ides" is greek for "son of" . Thus "Moshe ben Maimon" becomes Moshe Maimonides in greek. I hope this helps. See my webpage (http://www.orthohelp.com/geneal/yohasin.htm) and others on my website for an explanation of Sephardic names, naming patters and name structures. RINKOWSKY (and variant spellings) Family - Lithuania & Elsewhere
#general
MikePnina Rothenberg <mikeroth@...>
Hi,
I am seeking information on my RINKOWSKY family. The surname has various spellings in English, including RINKOFSKI and RINKOVSKY. My grandmother was born in Landverova (now Lentvaris). Her father's name was Isaac and her mother's name was Rose. The town is located between Vilnius and Trakai, but I've not been able to locate any records of the town or the family. Other relatives have identified the town, too. I don't know where else the family might have lived, before the family moved to Lentvaris. My grandmother and her six sisters moved to London, England in the late 1890's. (They also had a brother, the youngest). After my grandmother married and had some children in England, she, my grandfather and their family moved to the U.S. around 1908. All her siblings and their families moved to South Africa. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike Rothenberg
