London2001 is safe! #general

david fielker <david@...>

For those attending the 21st International Conference and are worried by
press reports about foot and mouth disease, we would allay your fears.

1. Foot and mouth disease (called hoof and mouth in the US) has nothing at
all to do with 'mad cow disease'.

2. It is not dangerous to humans and there are no risks attached to
consuming meat or milk.

3. The severe measures being taken to contain it are on the whole for
economic reasons.

4. There are movement restrictions in some countryside areas like the Lake
District and Dartmoor.

5. London has no restrictions at all.

For more information check our Web site at <www.jewishgen.org/london2001>.

We look forward to meeting you there.

Great Grandfather - N.Y-1947 #general

I know that my great grandfather was born in 1859 in Russia. In 1947 he
lived in an apt. bldg at Anthony Ave in the Bronx. I was told that
he was in his 90's and he was working as one of the men that would sit
with a body before burial. I don't know what this is called. Did they do
this in a funeral home? Temple? Does anyone know if there are records of
the people that did this? Thanks again,
Susan Stock in Agoura Hills, Ca

Dear JewishGenners:

I am trying to discover what a carver and gilder did at the turn of the

Anyone who is aware of terms in the silver-working trade - your

Many thanks and Chug Samach !
