Jewishgen search for SHIMAZI and the town of Ourla #general

Claire Guarguir <claire.guarguir@...>

Hello,

I need some help.
I'd like to know if someone has heard about the name of SHIMAZI (>from
Izmir). Is it possible that this family name is another way for SAMUEL or
SHMUEL ?
Can someone tell me where the town of Ourla is situated in Turquey,
is it not far >from Manisa and Izmir ?

Thanks a lot in advance

I recently read that 50% of the 1st. graduating class at the U.S.
Military Academy at West Point was Jewish. Of course, the class consisted
of only 2 students.

Finding someone in Ontario? #general

Israel P

Last week, I found a reference to a previously unknown Pikholc on a site
called savingjews.org, which I had never heard of. According to the site,
this woman (or girl) lived with a Polish family in Czortkow for two years
during the Shoah period.

I asked Yad Hashem if they have any references and they told me that the
Polish couple were acknowledged as Righteous Gentiles in 1983, but there was
no reference to the Pikholc in their file.

Yad Vashem gave me an address in Stouffville Ontario for their son, but the
Canadian phone sites - though they have fifteen listings in Ontario for this
surname, one of which has the correct initial in West Lincoln - has no person
by this surname in this location.

Are there full given names in Ontario paper phone books, so at least
look for someone in West Lincoln who can check the first name that goes
with the initial? (I am open to other suggestions as well.)

Information on Dvinsk/Daugavpipls, especially music education there #belarus

Lois Rosen

I am interested in finding out more about Dvinsk and its population. Is anyone
working on a site? The Dvinsk ShtetlLink isn't active, as far as I can see. In
particular, I would like to find out about music schools/violin teaching there from
about 1900 to 1914. Our grandfather was a young violinist who emigrated to the US to
evade conscription in the Russian army. He was subsequently drafted into the US
army... to play the violin!

Has any Genner been there? I will be in Vilnius and
have time for a day trip to Zaskevichi. I have found a
driver to take me there, but duen to the difficulty
getting a visa I would like to know if its worth the
time. I have no specific family sites to visit.
Does anyone know its size or of any Jewish sites to
see? The Belarus Consulate was of no help.
Thanks for any input.

NISNEVICH - Belarus #belarus

Schelly Dardashti <dardasht@...>

Dear Genners,

I met a TALALAY cousin and her husband who have been living in Israel for 30
years for the first time last week. We shared the usual reports, charts,
photographs and it was extremely interesting. Both are Moscow-born. both are
retired engineers who speak excellent English.
Her husband is interested in finding possible relatives and has not been
able to locate anyone.

His name is Lev NISNEVICH.
His father was Baruch married to Zina KAGANOV
His grandfather was Iosif/Yosef married to Fruma bat Movsha (no family name
known ... yet)
His great-grandfather was Zelig, wife not yet known.

He believes his father was >from Baranovich (west of Minsk), but he also
remembers hearing mentioned the town of Saliba, which we believe is Seliba.
According to ShtetlSeeker, there are two places with the same name. One is
60 miles WSW of Mogilev and the other is 30.5 miles SSW of Mogilev, near
Bychau, and is NW of Bobruisk.

Lev said he was told that a possible meaning of the name (in Polish) is
"unknown." His father had a brother who died without children (there
were/are four sisters, we are working on getting their names).
He does not know the names of his GF or GGF's siblings.

Searching JewishGen Family Finder, I find people searching similar families
from various Belarus towns between Minsk and Mogilev, such as Smilovichi,
etc. I will be contacting them as well and will have Lev enter his
information in the JGFF.
I also searched Belarus SIG pages and found similar family names in Minsk,
Igumen, etc. (none specifically >from Seliba or Baranovich).
However, I thought I would just post this in the hope that someone out there
sees something familiar in these names.
If this family name rings a bell with you, please contact me.

With best wishes for a very happy Passover and great genealogical
discoveries this season,

As I have already informed privately Maurice Preter and others, I do not
have the traveling time table of the exhibition. I guess the best way to
find out about it would be to contact Timothy Prus, the curator for the
Archive of Modern Conflict in London, which now holds the entire Ross photo
collection. The exhibited photos are also included in the book Lodz Photo
Album, ISBN 0-9542813-7-3. Please find more details about the photographer
and the book at:
