Absolutely, Shirley. And thank you! Where do you live? Can you enter data
into an EXCEL spreadsheet? You have no idea how mucb material we have that
we need help in databasing. And how many projects he have on "hold"
because either we don't have the volunteers to help or we don't have the
money to undertake them properly. Martha

Moderator Note: Could you respond privately-thanks.

I'd be willing to help but I don'r read any language except English.
Would this be
of any help?

Kurland Cemetery Plots and Volunteering #latvia

CWhippman@...

Re Projects and Volunteers- Cemetery Documentation

Martha Lev Zion raises an important issue about the importance of volunteers
and goes about it with her wonderful forthright gusto in this as in
everything! As for the documentation of the US Kurland cemetery plots. The
fact that only a handful of volunteers has come forward probably reflects the
prospect of going out to a wind swept snowy East Coast cemetery in Jan/Feb
and I expect that this task will seem much more appealing to everyone in
May/June when it can be combined with a picnic and a family style outing to a
place of Jewish interest generally.
The stages of the project should include identifying those cemeteries
which have a specific Courland presence. This involves someone who is able
to do a little phoning round. The 1924 Memorial booklet speaks specifically
of the purchase of land which I believe >from the context means in New York
though the exact location is not identified. In addition, cemeteries often
have record offices that hold key documentation in record form. Don't forget
photographs. They will really add to the atmosphere of any eventual website.
Jewishgen has a standard template for entering this information so this will
need some careful planning but it sounds exciting and fun too. Best,
Constance

Los Angeles Area Coordinators #yizkorbooks

Jan Meisels Allen <janmallen@...>

Dear Yizkor Book Coordinators:

I am asking those of you who are in the LA area to get in touch with me. I
am the coordinator of 2 Yizkor Books, Stawiski and Sochaczew Poland. I am
also the VP of Programs for JGSLA and I have scheduled a tutorial as part of
an upcoming JGSLA regular monthly meeting on how Yizkor Books can help in
genealogy. I would love to speak to those of you who are in the LA area for
ideas and perhaps in participating in the tutorial. The tutorial is not a
"how to" but rather how it can be used as an aid for the genealogist.

Thank you

Terry, I hope you don't mind if I respond [instead of? in addition to?]
Constance. I believe that Bay City MI had a huge Courland population. It
would be wonderful if you could take pictures of the tombstones there.
Anything that is in Hebrew, not to worry, I or others can translate. I am
so impressed that so many of you have come forward with offers to help. I
guess you didn't realize that so few of us were doing all that work. Your
offers are deeply appreciated!

I will be in touch with you privately, Terry, about the cemetery project.
Thank you again!!

Martha

Constance,

I guess MArtha's note got me thinking, too. I do not know how to help, but I
would like to. My Jewish ancestors in this country are largely buried in
Bay City michigan's Hebrew Cemetery. Is there some way I could volunteer to
be responsible for getting pictures of those tombstones??? Would that be what
is needed and would it help? Unfortunately I am not able to translate...

RSVP,

Terry

I will do whatever I can to translate; reproduce; fund, etc. the
preservation of documents.

My husband's family will lead, but an amazing number of Scots-Irish types
will follow on the effort in the preservation of documents which must be
treasured.

Re: "Riga Kurlander Verein" and the unbalanced work load #courland #latvia

Martha Lev-Zion <martha@...>

Gee, Martha, you surely do sound angry. You're probably right, but I don't
think that all that anger will get us anywhere, except make everyone angry
with you.

Now, where were we?

Allan
Maybe you are right Allan. I wasn't as angry as I am frustrated. There are
so few of us doing so much for the rest that I worried about burnout. One
cannot expect these few people to extend themselves all the time for the
vast majority. As it happens, since my posting we have had a fair number of
people volunteering and I am feeling much better about things.

My major worry is that I believe in trying to reconstruct the families of
Courland who are no more. No country suffered as great a percentage of
murder and disappearance of their Jews as we did in Latvia. Some families
have no witnesses to their very existence; they were all wiped off the face
of the earth. Every soul should have a name; every Jew should be
remembered. And I fear that the ceaseless work the few of us are doing
will wear us down and burn us out. I am also very family oriented and I
love watching the successful reuniting of families who had long since lost
touch. I don't want any of that to be lost. Courlanders share a special
history and a culture that is common to us all; we are, in effect, one big
extended family. So I thought that we could all pull together as a family
and share the load.

I think that we are getting closer to that goal! So "where were we?" -
pulling together toward our common goal!

Martha

Last year I visited Losonc (Lucenec), formerly Nograd county, now
Slovakia, where I took pictures in the Jewish cemetery. Some of my
shots can be found on my home page (see address below). I you want to
post them somewhere you are more than welcome to download them. Soon
I will post more of them.

Peter

We now have a researcher in Budapest who will be indexing Hungarian
cemeteries for the ONLINE WORLDWIDE BURIAL REGISTRY program, which
you can read about at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/.

Feel free to recommend a cemetery whose gravestones you would like
photographed and the data indexed by writing to Lou Schonfeld. In
addition, please help the project by contributing funds to pay for
the work. The money will be used to pay a modest salary and
expenses to this researcher and to pay for needed equipment for the
project.

Tax-deductible donations should be made to the Photograph Jewish
Tombstones project at
http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/Hungary.html.
