Oral interview recording methods #general

Fern Blood <feblood@...>

Can anyone recommend computer software or hardware tools for recording oral
history interviews? I've used an audio cassette recorder in the past but would
like to create digital recordings. I'm wondering if there is software I could run
on my laptop (which has an internal camera). I don't use an ipad, ipod, iphone....

Many thanks,

Ukmerge, Lithuania Foreign Passport Applications - 1925-1938 #general

Howard Margol

A translation of the Ukmerge Foreign Passport Applications - 1925-1938, has just
been received and will be added to the Litvak SIG Ukmerge District Research (DRG)
web site.

The list contains the greatest amount of very important information about the
individuals listed that I have ever seen, and I have seen thousands of lists of
various types. I cannot emphasize too strongly the value of this list. To give you
an idea of the information that is included, for most of those listed, here is a
sample of what is there.

Surname, given name, father's name, maiden name of females, date of birth, place
of birth (not everyone was born in Ukmerge), destination, marriage status, the
street address and town of residence, the exact date of their Foreign Passport
Application.

Additionally, there is an individual file for almost every applicant. The file
includes a photo of the applicant, a Lithuanian passport that was issued on a
prior date, plus a lot of family information. Using the information that has been
translated, a researcher can contact the Central Archive in Vilnius and obtain a
copy of all documents in an individual file.

Please do not dismiss this list as of no interest to you personally only because
your family left Lithuania before 1925. Your immediate family may have left but
not everyone left. In most cases, siblings, Uncles, Aunts, and cousins remained.

It will be several days before the entire list will be available on the Ukmerge
DRG web site. If you are already a member of the Ukmerge DRG web site, please be
patient for a day or two and you will be able to see the entire list. If you are
not a part of the Ukmerge DRG, you may be interested in gaining access not only to
this list but also thousands of other records for the towns in the Ukmerge
District.

Roy Ogus r_ogus@hotmail.com is the Ukmerge District Coordinator. If you
have a problem accessing the site, please contact Roy. However, give Roy
several days to post the list on the web site before contacting him.

Again, I repeat, this is one of the most important lists I have ever seen
from a standpoint of genealogical information included. I am sure you will
agree after you see the list.

The Jewish Cemetery of Bendery #general

Yefim Kogan

The Jewish Cemetery of Bendery Project:

I would like to thank all people who donated for the project. At this time
the project is almost complete. I am going soon to send all the records and
photos to JewishGen JOWBR and the last thing to do is to pay for the
photographing job well done. In about a week I will send all the photos and
registry to JOWBR, and also will put at Bessarabia SIG Cemetery section
website many many photos of unknown people >from the cemetery. There are
about 900 such photographs and there are no inscription, in many cases
broken stones, in a few cases a photo is on the stone, but without any
writing left. We will preserve even these photos for graves we never be
able to recognize. We also have a number of photos of Mass graves at the
cemetery, >from the pogroms of 1917, murders of 1941.

I need tell you that we do not have yet all the money to the terrific
photographer who spend days to do the job. His travel to the cemetery took
him almost one hour each way. He lives in village, which used to be a
Jewish shteitle Kaushany, and to go to Bendery had to cross border to
Transnistria region, and that took time.

We are still short about $1000.

I am thinking of how to collect this much money, and come to an idea.
Everyone who will donate for the project $25 or more will get directly from
me the records and photos for their relatives. Of course, who donated
before will also get all this information. There are many photos which are
second, third, fourth copies of the same monument, which I cannot send to
JOWBR, but I promise to send them to you.

Please, let me know how much $$ you donated(I need this to keep track) and
also the names of people you are looking at the Bendery Cemetery. Include
surnames, first names, father's names if you know and approximate dates of
death.

All the best,

Oregon HB 2093-Genealogists Make A Difference! #general

Jan Meisels Allen

I previously reported on this forum that a bill introduced in Oregon at the
request of the Governor would extend the waiting periods for birth records
from 100 years to 125 years and for marriage records >from 50 years to 100
years and death records >from 50 years to 75 years and would redact cause of
death >from death records. I am delighted to inform you that at the hearing
on April 10 an amended version of the bill was adopted which removed the
redaction of cause of death and retains the 100- and 50 year wait periods
for the various vital records. While we won this round we need to remain
vigilant as it still has to pass the floor of the House-expected vote this
Friday or next Monday and then go to the Senate Health Care and Human
Services Committee for a hearing and then the floor of the Senate before
going to the governor for signature. While we are not expecting any
surprises, we need to continue to monitor this.

This outcome would not have occurred without the genealogical community
contacting their local representatives, the committee members and especially
the chairman and rallying the troops! It showed that genealogists can make a
difference. Thank you to both IAJGS member societies, JGS of Oregon, and
JGS of Willamette Valley who contributed to the outcome by sending
statements and making local contacts.

The attempt by some states to adopt a proposed, not Department of Health and
Human Services approved revised Model Statistics Act, is something we all
need to watch out for in each state. Today showed that we can make a
difference and if you want to continue to have access to vital records in a
reasonable time frame we need to actively participate when bills are
introduced that adversely affect our access to needed family history.
Again, if you learn of legislative attempts to restrict access in your
states please let IAJGS know.

As the amended bill is not yet posted to the legislative website and won't
be fore several days, if any one wants a copy of the amended bill please let
me know as I have the pdf and can send it to you.

ViewMate translation request - Old German script #general

Werner Hirsch

I've posted a short note written in old German script. I assume that it was
written by Maier ZUNDER in 1898 to his daughter, Sophie CHASE on her 38th
birthday. I have been able to read most of it, but need to fill in a couple of
words which are illegible to me.

I've posted it on ViewMate with what I've been able to read and translate so
far. I'd appreciate any help. You can find it at:
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM26910

Please respond via the form provided in the ViewMate application.
Thank you very much.

ViewMate translation request - Yiddish #general

Roy Ogus

I've posted an image of a postcard that I believe was written in Yiddish in during
the 1930's for which I would appreciate a translation. the translation doesn't need
to be exact - I would just like to get an understanding of what was being
communicated.

The image can be found on ViewMate at the following address:
