Re: Questions about a JOWBR entry for a cousin - Michael ORLOW #germany

Fritz Neubauer

Dear Lin,

I think there are two points that may explain Michael ORLOW's grave in Vienna:

1) The murder took place in the concentration camp Buchenwald on German
territory and not in a extermination camps in the East. (No urns came back >from
the East.) What I read about such a situation is this:

Relatives were offered the possibility of having an urn to them
- for a fee. Whether the content of the urn had anything to do
with the remains of the victim is open to question ... And the
official cause of death was fake in most cases.

2) The body had been cremated, and I am almost certain, the cremation
would have taken place in Buchenwald, not in Vienna.

I hope that helps, Fritz Neubauer in Beilefeld.

why he would be in a cemetery, since he was murdered by the Nazis."

Re: Questions about a JOWBR entry for a Buchenwald victim - Michael ORLOW #germany

Tobias A. Kemper <kemper@...>

Lin Herz lin2@cfl.rr.com asked about a JOWBR entry for her cousin,
Michael ORLOW. [some details follow below.]
<I don't understand. I don't understand why he would be in a
cemetery, since he was murdered by the Nazis. ?? I didn't know that any
of those lost were buried- and that there would be burial notes and all.
Hello Lin,
as I understand, Michael Orlow has died in Buchenwald Concentration
Camp. Two facts are important:

a) Michael ORLOW died in early 1940, i.e. about two years before the
Wannsee Conference and before the "official" beginning of the shoa. In
this time, Jews have been killed or died in Nazi concentration camps,
but they were not killed systematically in this time.

b) Buchenwald was not an extermination Camp like Auschwitz, Majdanek
etc. in eastern Europa. Buchenwald was primarly used to keep both Jewish and
non-Jewish prisoners and to force them to slave labor, but it was not
used to kill them.

I presume that Michael Orlow has died of hunger or illness or maybe was
murdered in another way, but at this early time, the relatives got the
ashes of their dead relatives to bury them.

The victims of the NS "euthanasia" in 1940/41 were burnt to ashes, and
then the relatives got some ashes in a post parcel to bury them (but in
most cases, really "some" ashes, not of exactly their murdered family member).

Translating age-at-death qualifiers Tarnow docs - German? #galicia

Judy Golan <judygolan@...>

Hi All,

Please help decipher the age-at-death qualifiers that appear in the
"dies vita" column on the two Tarnow documents I've posted.

When there is simply a number, it's surely "years". Sometimes there is
a clear "m" for "months". But there seem to be other modifiers and
it's not clear what they are. Months? Weeks? Days? Hours?

There are two documents with slightly different qualifiers -
abbreviations in some cases. I would like to have definitions for the
abbreviations and qualifiers..

These are on ViewMate at the following links:

Anyone heard of Zeichnen Street? #lodz #poland

In JewishGen's Lodz Ghetto database, relatives of my grandmother's and one
other unrelated family are listed as having their original address at
Zeichnen 10, Lodz. I cannot find this street, or any name similar to it, in
the Lodz Ghetto Streets database, or in any other source of Lodz street
names, old or new, and I tried plenty. I even tried translating the word
"zeichnen" (German for to "draw" or "sign"), into Polish ("rysowania" or
"podpisania") to see if there was any street with a similar name, but there
wasn't.

Does anyone have any idea what and/or where this street was?
