Re: Birthdates #general

sallybru <sallybru@...>

One of the things the discussion about birthdates points out: it really
depends where your family lived. Russia and 'the East', generally had
little knowledge of birthdates (of course, there is a lot of variation-some
knew the year and the Jewish date, some knew the Jewish date, etc.). In
Germany, where M. Bernet's ancestors came from, civil registration started
very early-some places in the 1700's. Where the Bruckheimer family came
from (now in Baden, but then the property the Electorate of the Main), civil
registration started in 1871 with the formation of the country 'Germany'.
If they were in Baden before that, they would have civil registration in
1807.

So, like so many things, you have to consider exactly where your family
lived in the year of the event.

Rabbi FRYDHEIM of Lublin #rabbinic

Ann Wine <annw@...>

Hi everyone

Does anyone know of a Rabbi in Lublin, Rabbi Izrael Icek FRYDGAJM
or FRYDHEIM?

He was probably born around 1850 and was apparently at some time on
the Beth Din - maybe in 1910 there abouts.

Does anyone have any idea where I could look to find this out? I am
in Sydney, Australia.

Thanks

letters >from folks who had received a message similar to mine, so the
translations helped not only me, but other researchers.

GLUCKSBERG=GLICKSBERG family. #general

Epstein moshe ruth <epmoru@...>

Hi Genners.

For several years I'm trying to collect information on GLICKSBERG
families. There are many spellings of the name:the original spelling is
GLUCKSBERG (u umlaut) apparently after a German town by this name.
Before the end of the 18th century G. families lived already in Warsaw and
Biala Podlaska.
According the information that I have ,most of the G. families lived, untill
the Holocaust, only in Warsaw and towns around it and group of towns east to
Warsaw like Biala,Mezerich, Wegrow,Sokolow, and more.
My sources: pages of testimony and ITS cards >from Yad Vashem-Jerusalem,lists of
JRI-PL,telephone directories SSDI etc. I have many names but I don't know how to
*tie* them because the Glicksbergs at present do not know much about the history of
their families before WW2.
I'm trying to find out the relations among all the Glicksbergs and if they
are >from one origin.

Now a days there are not more than few tens of G.families, mainly in the
U.S.A. , Israel and some South American countries. Many of them believe
that there is no other family by this name. I found several families through FTJP that their mothers or grandmothers were Glicksberg,(Klicksberg Gligsberg Glisberg Glucksberg etc.) but I can not trace them.

I will be very grateful for any information!

I am sending this message again as I had no responses at all to my last
posting. I am hoping that someone may be going to the Plymouth Rock Cemetery
in Brockton and can take 2 photographs for me (or send me the inscriptions)
I have reason to believe that the graves may be those of my
great-grandfather's brother and his wife . The rest of the family went to
South Africa at the turn of the century.

Details are as follows

For the NY Times, check the Index to the New York Times Index (yes, the
index to the index). That is the best place to find obituaries and other
information by name. For the Index to the New York Times, you need to
search by year.

<Will someone please send me the English name for yiddle.
I have a Chaim ber Yiddle on a Tombstone.>

Thank you, Fran Marcus Entin

On the Tombstone is written-
"Chaim son of Yehudah"

Yiddle is Yehudah
A Yid in Yiddish is a Jew.

Jew is derived >from Judah, member of the tribe of Judah.
Jew - one whose religion is Judaism.
Old French gyu, >from Latin Judaeus, >from Greek Ioudatos,
from Hebrew Yehudi, >from Yehudah.
So Yiddle is Yehudah.

As to the Yankees, I don't know...
every name without Jewish sound, will do...

The Polish Drummer Boy: episode 2 #general

SHEILA TOFFELL <toffell@...>

Many thanks to all who told me of the politics of the time. I have a couple
of questions that arise >from the replies. Maybe some of you could enlighten
me further. My family lived in Skulsk, Poznan, which is close to the old
German border. Someone mentioned the Austrian army. I thought there was a
period that this area was part of Prussia. I hadn't figured on Austria.
Prussia, Austria, Russia, what odds he would be in which army? And again,
what's available?
