Slopnice Austria (now Poland) #general

I just learned that my great grandfather, Adolph (nee Abraham) Goldfinger
was bron in Slopnice Austria which is now part of Poland. I can not find
out much about this place. Does anyone have any information that might be
helpful. He was born in 1860 and came to the USA (SF) in 1900.

Hello!

This picture was taken in Poland (around 1900 according to my
grandfather), and represents the BLUHBAUM / BLIBAUM family. The man
with the beard is my 3rd great grand father Israel Mayer Bluhbaum
(1847- abt 1937). The two girls are two of his daughters, and the
soldier could be his son. Do you recognize anyone or anything?

Hello!

This picture was taken in Poland, maybe around 1900.
Do you recognize the uniform of the soldier? My grandfather says it's
not Polish but rather Austrian.
What do you think?

Daniel Sachs <sachsmd@...>

I'm pleased to forward this message >from the Czech
Jewish Museum in Prague, in response to my inquiry
re Meier SACHS. By way of explanation, I do not have
an uninterrupted chain going all the way back to Meier
SACHS, but I found a reference to this man in my
grandfather's genealogical file (on a scrap of paper),
and in deciding such questions, courts attach a high
degree of credence to information gleaned >from family
genealogical files.

If anyone can "fill in the gaps," I'd be delighted to
hear >from him/her.

Daniel Sachs Bethesda, Maryland <sachsmd@...> s"d

Dear Mr. Sachs,
as for Meir ha-Levi Sachs (Sax, Saxe), he was elected for parnas of Prague
Jewish community in the year 1579. For this fact see an article "Zur
Geschichte der Juden in Oesterreich III. Gemeindestreitigkeiten 1567-1678"
by Gerson Wolf (published in Zeitschrift fuer Geschichte der Juden in Deutschland,
1, 1887, Nr. 4, p. 312). For this periodical see, on the Web:
http://www.compactmemory.de. Meir Sachs is often
mentioned in the records of this period in the book of
Gottlieb Bondy and Franz Dvorsky "Zur Geschichte der
Juden in Boehmen und Mahren", vol. I., Prague 1906.

In the Old Jewish cemetery in Prague is buried his
daughter Serl, wife of Eliakim, Rabbi of High
Synagogue in Prague (1622). With best wishes, Yours sincerely

I have been told that an ancestor of mine, Meier Saxe,
was parnass or head of the Jewish community of Prague
in 1579. Can you confirm this, or provide me with any
leads on how I might verify this?
I have a book by Otto Muneles, Bibliographical Survey
of Jewish Prague, published by the Jewish State
Museum >of Prague in 1952. It mentions a Michael
Sachs and a >Salomon Sachs, but no Meier Saxe.
Do you have any further information?

Re: Confiscation of vehicles from Jews in Nazi Germany 1933 #germany

MBernet@...

In various messages I had claimed having ridden in a Jewish-owned car in
1935-37; and being given a pleasure ride by a non-Jewish relative as a favor
at a time when Jews were no longer permitted to own/operate autos, in 1937-38.

I have since received privately some very convincing messages of Jews owning
cars in Germany as late as 1939

Obviously:

1. My understranding of what was happening when my sister and I were taken
on a pleasure ride on the new Autobahn to the Nurnberg airport with Frau
Nurnberger (a gentile) in 1937/38 was wrong

2. The law was applied differently in Bavaria, or in Nurnberg where I
lived--remember, this was die Stadt des Reichsparteitag and the personal turf of
the notorious Wilhelm Streicher, and the epicenter of German anti-Semitism.

3. There may have been some special reason why certain Jews in Germany were
still allowed to drive or own a car in the fall of 1938

GOLDMANN IN SOUTH AFRICA, but from where in Germany? #germany

Adam Yamey <adamandlopa@...>

My relative Henry BERGMANN (1831-1866) was associated
in business in South Africa with Louis GOLDMANN, who
ran the Burghersdorp branch of Mosenthals' trading
firm and was also a Justice of the Peace.

Richard GOLDMANN, who was born in Burghersdorp in
1861, states in his autobiography that his father
(whom he does not name) was born in "eastern Germany".
Richard had a brother Sydney and another 3 siblings
Alfred,Edwin and Alice.

Richard GOLDMANN wrote that he had relatives in
Middelburg, South Africa. >from another source, I am
fairly sure that these were the members of
FRIEDLANDER family (to whom I am also related) who had
come out >from Beuthen to Middelburg in the mid-19th
century.

I am hoping that there may be sufficient clues in the
above for someone to be able to tell me the exact
location in Germany of the town where the GOLDMANN
family lived before setting off for South Africa. I
would also be happy to learn anything else about the
GOLDMANN family.

Hallo all LatvianSIGers,

Is there an online map of Latvia that I can access? I am looking for the
whereabouts of three places. Friederichstad, Courland, Latvia, Chesnik

Latvia. Is there a place called Niara? I am working on a family tree for
a family called COWAN (name change >from SCHNEIDERMAN/SHNEIDERMAN ) and I
believe that there is a researcher with the name HORELICK researching
