Re: Interpreting Russian Orthodox verses Hebrew date in Archive Record. #lithuania

A good site for calendar conversion is http://www.rosettacalendar.com/.

Our current calendar is the Gregorian Calendar. The Julian Calendar was the
preceding iteration enacted by Julius Caesar in 46 BCE and is the one used by
the Russian Orthodox Church and a few other Orthodox churches. Most Orthodox
churches have converted to the Gregorian Calendar except for movable feasts
(Easter).

Yes, at present the two calendars diverge by 13 days. Yes, 20 Heshvan 5675 was
27 October 1914 Julian (Russian) and 9 November 1914 Gregorian (Western).

| Is this correct? The Julian date is 13 days off in

Yes it is. The famous Russian November 7th 1917 (new style) revolution
actually occurred on October 25th 1917 (old style).

Does this mean daughter of a cantor? If so would someone be called that if
they were not a daughter of a cantor? What other information do you have

Dar Genners,
The name of my oldest Uncle on his Naturalization Paper is Nathanson. This

He immigrated on the Rotterdam at the age of 17 ( ship manifest too faint

English so whatever the person a the NY Dock heard is what I have. The whole
family who followed up until 1896 or 1897 used the same name.
Searching for Hebrew/Jewish name for Nathan Nathanson. For 9 years up to

Dear Genners,

I have just finished two quilts using old family pictures. Each square has
a picture of an ancestor. There's my parent's wedding picture, my father as
a six-year old, my grandparents and their parents, and so on.

If anyone wishes to see it please contact me personally and I'll send a

I will also help if anyone wants to know how to make these quilts.

pag. is likely an abbrevation for "pagasts" a political entity somewhat like
county in the US, maybe smaller.

Hello,

I have found some information on family members >from this list. I do
not understand one abbreviation I found in the birthplace column.

Birthplace: Nurmusen pag., Talsen d. what is "pag."?

I also cannot find any city in Courland, Talsen district called
Nurmusen. Would anyone have a clue to where it was or could be today?

Nurmhusen is a small village in the Talsi district.
In German it is Nurmhusen.
In Latvian it is Nurmuiza.
Pag. in Latvian is short for pagasts - a small rural distinct.
In Russian it is volost.
