Thanks to Suzan Wynne for addressing my ignorance of the Kehillah
system. This information leads to an obvious question: Do any of
the membership records still exist? If so, who has access to them?
Has the information been incorporated into any of the JewishGen
databases?

Paris - Goldenberg #france

Myra & Peter Waddell <mpwaddell@...>

It would appear that either my great-grandparents GOLDENBERG had not yet
arrived in Paris in 1872 or else that they didn't give their details to
the census taker. What a shame.

Their niece, Etta GOLDENBERG(not Ettie as I wrote yesterday - sorry,
typed it incorrectly) married Aaron Hirsh HOFFMAN - maybe not even in
Paris. They had a daughter - Rose HOFFMAN(1873-1946). That's all I've
discovered so far about those generations. I don't know the names of
Etta's parents, unfortunately. Yet another brick wall.
Happy Hanukkah to all genners. Myra (Adelaide) South Australia)

Hello Myra

It was for you that I did researches for "GOLDENBERG". As I told you
before there is no census in Paris where your family appears. Then the
last one with names and religion is this of 1872. Then the next ones
(without a religion, of course, it is strictly forbidden in France) are those
of 1926, 1931, 1936 and 1946. Your family arrived after 1872 and left
for England around 1898.

With my best regards
Happy Hanukkah

Stephane Toublanc
Paris - France

PS: first time that you mention a cousin "Etty". What were her parents
names? No Etty for birth or marriage in Paris 1860-1902. With GOLDENBERG,
somehow near, only 2 births for Helen GOLDBERG daughter of Susskind
GOLDBERG, and Eugenie GOLDENBERG daughter of Maurice GOLDENBERG. This by
looking for Estel, Esther, Ester, Emilie Elen, etc...

Re: Aschaffenburg video on line #germany

Dear Werner,
Just to tell you that I have not seen such a wonderful and interesting movie
you have done. I immediately made a DVD to show it to my friends.
I was 8 years old when the Kristallnacht happened, the synagogue at my
school in Berlin burned out and half a year later I was on my way to Palestine.

I can still remember that 3 months later, 2 cousins of my grandfather
returned >from KZ Sachsenhausen with a shaven head. All the detained
(30,000) in KZ Buchenwald, Sachsenhausen and Dachau at that awful night
understood very well that it is high time to leave Germany as fast as
possible, the two cousins went to the USA.

Thanks for the movie and best regards from

Who was the Admor of Siedlice? #rabbinic

Cindy g

I recently found a tombstone with an inscription on which it said
that the deceased was the daughter of Yehoshua Asher, Admor of
Siedlice. She died in 1995. It further gives an impressive list of
Gedolim >from whom she descended. This list included, Elimelach of
Lizhensk and Yacov Yitzak, the Chozen of Lublin.

The woman's married name is on the stone, but I would like to find
out her maiden name. Can anyone tell me about Yehoshua Asher?

Thank you,
Cindy Gallard

Help Finding an Ottoman-Empire Family Researcher #sephardic

JNetNF2BonVivart@...

Dear Fellow Sephardi-Genners,

For some time now, I have
unsuccessfully tried different avenues for answers to my Ottoman - Empire Family
branches which are predominantly CANETT/KANETTI, de VIDAS, BEHAR & FRANCO. I was
told to check the Istanbul record listings on-line. They appeared in microscopic
form, & I do not have the technological skill/know-how of how to view these
legibly! Ideally, I'd like to find a U.S. - Based Ottoman-Empire Family
Researcher to help me order any available & pertinent records. I have family in
Turkey. Is it easier for one in Turkey to obtain old Turkish Records? While
there are so many bounds I need to make in my Sephardic Family findings, the
greatest gain would be to obtain the records (birth & otherwise) for Luna
Canetti of either Andreanople or Kikierle, Turkey. All I have to go on is that
she was a cousin to Elias Canetti, the Nobel Laureate, and she was married to my
grandfather, Nissim Behar of Sleven, Bulgaria. It has been so frustrating to
persevere, yet have continually such a hard time unearthing more of my
Ottoman Roots. Any help is tremendously appreciated!

Best Wishes, Jeannette Nemon-Fischman

death certs in USA #general

Mansefield <jubilee09@...>

I have never needed certs of any kind >from the USA up until now, and I was just
thinking of trying to obtain a couple when I read aboput PA Dept of Health, and
realised the system must of course be regionalised and not centralised. Is there
any central listing of what Dept is responsible in each State? Also, if I have
Social Security info, where do I go with it to get further details? I prefer to go
to the source if possible....with English certificates there are agencies charging
extra 10 pounds above the usual 7 that I pay by direct order.
