WW I Lithuanian Deportation #lithuania

Sam Gelfand <Samat773@...>

I have reason to believe that my maternal grandmother Rose (KHAIT) ZAK died
during WW I while in exile in Russia before her children Sara Gitel and
Nathan returned home to Naujamiestis,Panevezys, Kaunas in late 1920.

Can anyone provide me with information sources for where people were
deported to, how they subsisted, and whether any lists of names relating
to the deportation exist ?

The International Tracing Service at Bad Arolsen has long had a collection
of Holocaust victims' personal effects found after liberation at Dachau,
Neuengamme and a few other places. It has finally placed on the web a
searchable database of the names of the owners, where these could be

Thank you for all of your emails. I wanted to also share some new information.

Alter Levine was listed under the organization, Ministers Cantors
Association of America(NY), which actually still exists today.

I am speculating that Alter Levine perhaps did not have his own synagogue.

Dear All,

I need help with resolving an unusual and troubling problem. Back in
February 2011 I ordered a birth record (of a possible ancestor) >from the
Warsaw State Archive. In May, I was notified that the archive had located
the record and was advised of the cost (69.53 Polish Zloty). I sent them the
money by wire transfer through Western Union. I just received a letter >from

I would appreciate having the following sentence (>from the same letter)
translated into English. I don't read Polish but fear that it tells me that
my check was not received.

Nie otrzymalismy rowniez zadnego czeku.

Has anyone had the same experience - of wire transferring funds by Western

Any advice or assistance will be appreciated.

If you are referring to the Rabbi Yitzchak Landau who was the
fatherinlaw of my ancestor the Noda B'yehuda then it would
certainly fit in >from everything I can see as he indeed did
have a son Rabbi Yaakov as stated in the Unbroken Chain of Neil

mother was the daughter of a Rabbi Zev Volf Prag (HaKohen) an

Yizkor Book Project, May 2011 #rabbinic

Lance Ackerfeld <lance.ackerfeld@...>

Shalom,

So, May was a record breaking month for the Yizkor Book Project and, in
particular, for those of you whose eyes are turned in the direction of
Lithuanian communities, you might say it was "bonanza" month.

In addition, to adding a remarkable number of articles >from Pinkas Lita
(Encyclopedia of Jewish Communities, Lithuania), we also received the very
generous donation by Josef Rosin and Joel Alpert of the detailed community
articles appearing >from their book called "Protecting Our Litvak Heritage".
This month we've added in a number of communities and in coming months we
will continue with this endeavor.

This is not to say that other countries were badly neglected this month and
you'll see below that there were new additions >from Poland, Hungary,
Slovakia and the Ukraine. Of course, we also continued to update existing
projects that our dedicated coordinators continue to send in.

Now, if the book you are interested isn't yet online or the translation you
are after doesn't appear, perhaps you'd be interested in coordinating a
project to see that it does go online. No need to be frightened of this
challenge - I'm here providing Yizkor Book "coaching" services <g> and will
help you set up a project and see it become a reality. So, now I'm just
waiting for your message...

As far as the May figures go, during this last month we have added these 3

Rabbinic Genealogy SIG #Rabbinic Re: R' Yitzchak Landau of Krakow #rabbinic

Yisrael Asper

If you are referring to the Rabbi Yitzchak Landau who was the
fatherinlaw of my ancestor the Noda B'yehuda then it would
certainly fit in >from everything I can see as he indeed did
have a son Rabbi Yaakov as stated in the Unbroken Chain of Neil
Rosenstein and the places and dates seem to match. My father's
mother was the daughter of a Rabbi Zev Volf Prag (HaKohen) an
Aleksanderer Chasid >from Lodz. Either he or his wife or both
were descended >from the Noda B'yehuda. I would suspect he was
as his last name was Prag.

Dear RavSigers
I am looking for info concerning ancestors and in particular descendants
of R' Yitzchak Landau, who was AB"D of Krakow, Poland, during the years
1754-1768. Did he have a son named R' Yaakov ? Was R' Yaakov LANDAU of
Tarlow (1705-1777) his son?
