Re: The name STEINBERG #germany

Zeev Raphael <zeevr@...>

Benzion Kaganoff in A Dictionary of Jewish Names, states the following:

STEIBERG (G) There are many places by the name in Germany, and there is
one town in Hungary. There is actually a Stone Mountain (Steinberg)
near Brody, Galicia. Sometimes the name is taken >from a place where
there was a hill of stones. Best wishes,

Zeev Raphael, Haifa

Re: Sefardim in Ashkenaz territory #galicia

Cyril FOX <cyril@...>

The fact that a shul is called "sefardish" does not necessarily mean that
it is a Sephardic shul.

Here in London , there was a shul in the East End called Philpot Street
Sefardish Shul.

However , its congregants were Ashkenaze.

The reason for the name was the fact that they used the old sephardic
liturgy.

I am changing ISPs - and my domain name has moved into a state of limbo, as
the Internet domain name servers change.

Anyone attempting to send me a file or e-mail, please send to
mailto:efine@cox.net for the next few days. After that,
mailto:efine@cygnetserv.com should be operational again.

Anything sent in the last 24 hours has probably been lost; please retransmit to the cox.net address.

Sorry for the inconvenience,

BERCOVICI #romania

The BERCIVICI (BERCOVITZ, BERCOVICH...) family I am seeking information on
came >from Romania.

Avraham (Abraham) and Sabine (Sabina Marcus) were my grandparents. They

daughters and two sons all born in Romania. Nettie (married name Springer),
Pepi (was married to Simon Beer), Cozin and Haim (born in Fokshani, Romania;
changed name to Ben-Dov in Israel, married to Naomi Misk). If you think we

The PIZAM family I am researching includes Simha-Leib Pizam and Haya Hinde.
They lived in Suceava (Northern district of Bucovina), in 1850 in Vrancea
Mounts, Putna district and in 1870 to Odobesti. Haya Hinde would have been
born around 1840-1845 and died in Rimnic Sarat in 1920. They had five
children. Malca and Zeidl were twins. Malca married Jancu Marcus in
Odobesti. and later also lived in Rimnic Sarat. Bube and Zeidel immigrated
to Philadelphia in the US and later she went on to Canada (where her
descendants in the Northern part of the US and Canada are GOLDBERG).
Another child was Solomon and he became a barber also living in Rimnic
Sarat. He had four children one of which was Rivka. She married a second
cousin (Haim Pizam) and they had Abraham and Hassida. Her family moved to
Israel and Abraham and his children to the US. Anyone who may think we are
related or can make a suggestion as how to further my research please
contact me.
