JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Hi Everyone,
On a visit to a village near to Khust, in Transcarpathia, I discovered some old people that remembered a branch of my family. They reported that the patriach was killed by a guy named Chukhi, who they described as some sort of Robin Hood. Has anyone heard of him? Pronounced "shukhee" by Ruthenians, and Chuhai by my Hungarian relative. I appreciate your thoughts. Hi,
I am hoping that you can help me. I am looking for a woman whose maiden name or name during the war was Lily Samuels. In 1946 she was found by Evelyn Chenkin nee Freedman in France where she had been a hidden child during ww2. Evelyn took her >from the Catholic family she was living with and reunited her with her aunt in the UK. It has been suggested that her aunt lived in Musswell Hill London and that Lily was married in London and has since moved to Australia. Is there any way I could find her?? Through marriage records, births certificates etc..immigration?? Hoping that you can help me. Kind regards, Miriam Hechtman MODERATOR NOTE: Please reply privately to the writer.

1828 Land Census Now On-Line!
#hungary
Vivian Kahn
Dear Friends,
I am thrilled to report that we have launched the Hungary section of the JewishGen databases page with the 1828 Hungarian Property Tax Census database. Check out this new resource at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Hungary/Census1828.htm This is only the first database that we plan to make available to those researching Jewish roots in old Hungary. We are indebted to Eric Bloch, the 1828 Census project coordinator, and the volunteers who transcribed the more than 8,000 records that are now available on-line. None if this would be possible, however, if it were not for Warren Blatt, Michael Tobias, and all of those JewishGen volunteers and supporters who keep our marvelous website on-line. There are two things that you can do to support this important project and to ensure that JewishGen and H-SIG can continue to support your research efforts. First of all, although the database already contains 8,000 names, there are thousands more records to transcribe. Eric hopes to complete this landmark project over the next 12 months but needs additional volunteers to transcribe names >from LDS microfilm. If you have access to a Family History Library and would like to help, please contact Eric at: <bloch@wi.rr.com>. You don't need to know Hungarian in order to transcribe these records. Check out the list of counties at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Hungary/Census1828.htm to see where volunteers are needed and contact Eric to sign up. The second thing you can do to ensure that the 1828 Tax Census and other resources will continue to be available to H-SIG subscribers is to make a financial contribution to JewishGen to support the maintenance of the website. It costs JewishGen 10 cents/record to put new data on-line and close to 1 cent per record for annual maintenance--almost $900 to upload and maintain 8,000 1828 Census records! These numbers are a drop in the bucket relative to the major shortfall needed to keep JewishGen databases on-line. Thanks to the H-SIG members who attended the Toronto conference, we were able to contribue more than $2200 to help keep JewishGen operating. Now that the Hungarian section of the JewishGen database page is on-line it is more important than ever to make a contribution to JewishGen. H-SIG has more than 650 subscribers but fewer than 30 % have ever made a financial contribution to JewishGen. Moreover, even with our impressive showing at the Toronto conference, JewishGen records show that less than 20% of H-SIG's subscribers have made a donation this year. Please help to keep JewishGen on line so that H-SIG volunteers can continue to provide important resources like the 1828 Property Tax Census. If you are not able to make a financial donation, make a contribution by volunteering to work on the 1828 database or the All-Hungary database. We need your help! Koszonom szepen, todah rabah, and thanks very much for your continuing support, Vivian Kahn, H-SIG Coordinator

Great news!
The 1828 Hungarian Property Tax Census database is now on-line at: < http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Hungary/Census1828.htm >. Check it out! Kudos to all those volunteers who have been working so diligently to put together this valuable resource. The database is still in its infancy, but already contains 8,000 names, and growing. We hope to complete the effort over the next 12 months, but we need additional volunteers to transcribe names >from LDS microfilm. If you have access to a FHC library and would like to help, please let me know at: bloch@wi.rr.com. You do NOT need to know Hungarian. There is no translation required since the names were all written in Latin characters. Happy searching! Eric M. Bloch, Coordinator Milwaukee, WI

Dear Genners,
"Thank you" to Warren Blatt and JewishGen for making this InfoFile available, and also to Marian Smith for creating it. To say that it is a "comprehensive reference guide".........I don't think I have ever seen anything this comprehensive online before! It's more than comprehensive. Now that I have said that........there seems to be something that I either missed or isn't there. It is this: In the column "Cause for Detension" on The Record of Aliens Held for Special Inquiry the notation is LPC which I know is "Likely to be Public Charge", however on that same line just before the name of the Inspector is a number----400. Others on the page have the number 320. It is a straight number----no dots or dashes. It does not look like it could be 'time.' I have looked through the appropriate section of the InfoFile and find no explanation of the number. What does that number mean? Thank you, >JewishGen is pleased to announce a major new InfoFile: "Manifest Markings: A Guide to Interpreting Passenger List Adelle Weintraub Gloger Shaker Hts., Ohio agloger@aol.com

Hamburg archive question
#general
Pam G <pgosl@...>
Hello,
This question is a real longshot, but I need help with figuring out number codes on a Hamburg Staatsarchive film, birth records (Jewish Gemeinde) from 1810-1860's. . it was on LDS film 1335030. There seems to be an index at the end of the film with names of the birth children, with a number code, from 0 to 150's range. The index is arranged by date of birth, andalphabetical order. However, there appears to be no correlation with say, for example, a named birth in 1828, #137,with any page numbers, or registry numbers on the film. There are some code numbers repeated, so it doesn't appear that they are unique numbers to one person. (But the ones repeated are for different years, families). I got a translation of one of the births and the witness appeared to be >from Switzerland. . which is entirely possible but makes me wonder if the film or a portion of it is mislabled. Or, would these codes represent #'s assigned by the archive to each register and therefore could be used to request records??? Additionally, half of the dates in the index don't appear in the film at all, even though there is an index, I'm assuming there must be another section(item?) of film somewhere to match it? I was told that additional items under one film should be on the same film. Has anyone had any experience with these archive records and/or this film to give an idea what these codes mean?? Or who I can contact in LDS with questions about these films, if anyone?? Thanks for any leads for information. . . Correction re Hamburg archive question
#general
Pam G <pgosl@...>
Hello,
Need to clarify my earlier request; I had 2 questions(clarifying the second question); 1. Regarding the archive codes. 2. Regarding the content of the LDS film; I should have said dates from 1810-1863 are in the index; only dates up to 1850 are shown in the register with descriptions. Does anyone know if the rest of the register listed in the index(assuming this is even the right film to go with the index) is shown somewhere else?? Sorry for the confusion; hopefully I didn't cause more. .> > Sincerely, Pam Gosling in California, USA
