FOIA requests #general

Hazanjo <hazanjo@...>

I just had a phone call >from a very helpful lady who works out of the office
in Lee's Summit, MO. While I had her on the phone I decided to clarify a
few things. She told me that all genealogy requests are now being handled
at this office. Sending requests there initially could save some time.
They will also accept requests by fax. Verification of death is required
when the birth date is less than 100 years ago, but they'll accept a picture
of the stone as proof. I'm providing a snail mail address and the fax
number, but they request that if you fax a request, that you don't
mail it as well.

Help to get Petition of Naturalization in Dayton, Ohio? #general

Mara Fein <maraharv@...>

Can anyone go to the Montgomery County Records Center in Dayton, Ohio to get
a copy of a petition of naturalization and intention for me? I am willing
to pay for any costs. I have the exact record numbers so it should be
pretty easy.

I have been trying to get a copy of my great grandfather's Petition of
Naturalization >from the Montgomery County Records Center since early
February when I sent in a check with the exact record number. When I call
they just keep telling me they'll send it and then they don't. I sent it
February and it's now almost June.

I have located an entire section of living family that may be mine and this
record is my last chance to figure it out.

Please reply confidentially.

Re: Surname puzzlement #general

Judith Romney Wegner

Whilst searching through the Ellis Island site online for Morris or Moses
Michaelovitch leaving England by sea for USA, the name Moses Mokoboitch came
up. Could this name be for real? Could it be that an official wrote down
whatn he thought he heard or is it simply illegible handwriting?

Dear Sandra

I think this could easily be a handwriting problem. Here's a
possible scenario:

Suppose the official meant to write "Mokolovitch" but accidentally
left out the "v"? if so, "Mokoloitch" in poor handwriting could
easily be misread later as "Mokoboitch" (the cursive l and b are
very similar to start with).

And "Mokolovitch" could easily be an attempt to write down
"Michaelovitch" (which would have been pronounced more like
MI-KHAIL-O-VICH in the original).

Subscription reminder! #romania

Rosanne Leeson <rdleeson@...>

Dear fellow ROM-SIGgers,

We are getting to vacation time once again, and so your Co-Coordinators
wish to remind you that you must set your SIG subscriptions to NOMAIL,
before you activate your out-of-office, or out of town responders. To do
this you should go to: www.jewishgen.org/listserv/sigs.html
Click on Modify options, and choose the ROM-SIG. When you return you
should do this in reverse, and reset your mail options to your usual
choice. Remember there is no Secretarial Staff at JewishGen . You
must do this for yourself!

If you do not, then every message that is sent out to the list is
returned to the sender! Please be courteous. We all have to deal with
so much spam that this is an extra burden that you put on our other
members.

Thank you,

Re: Isachar Widows & Orphans Benevolent Society #belarus

Jerome Seligsohn <jselig1315@...>

It is with great interest that I read of Marge
Spears-Soloff's reply on the previous life of this
society. At the rate that I am archiving this group I
foresee four feet of library space and yet the vast
amount of the records go back only to 1970. The
society was formed in 1862. It is obvious that changes
in the direction of the society took place long before
the remaining records were transferred to YIVO. This
is rather the rule in the great majority of benevolent
society's records. A pity for you genealogical
researchers but a blessing for the keeper of the
society's records. However, with this interesting
response to my message we all now know that widows and
orphans were once a concern of Isachar.

my father left in 1920 when the area was part of poland. i still have his

I also have found a 1912 Voter's List on the Jewishgen site for the Grodno
Gubernia, Kobrin district which includes Drohichyn on the SIG Belarus site
(http://data.jewishgen.org).
My mother, who was born there, could not even get a birth
certificate when she left in 1929 because she claimed all the records had
been destroyed during World War 1.
