Grodno? #poland

PBethWeiss@...

Dear Bialystok group,

I would like to know your opinion. I have just found the manifest for my
GGM's 1892 journey to the US. She was Rebekka PONITZ SEGALOWITZ. There, she
states she is >from Grodno. I know already that she is buried in the Bialystok
section of the cemetary in Elmont, NY.

from these 2 facts, is there any way to deduce if she had lived in the city
of Grodno itself, or maybe just in the area, or in Bialystok, or just the
region? If not, is there another way to find out?

I don't where to start looking for records for her and her family in Europe.
Thank you for any help,

Regards,

Dear list

I'm new and need some advice. I was looking a
list of researchers but did not find any.
Maybe some of you knows a good one who works in
Vilna. I have many family names to search in the
region of Smorgany (Lithuania) and Druya (Belarus).
Can any of you confirm the availability of Druya
documents in Lithuanian archives?
Many thanks in advance.

PBethWeiss@...

Dear Group,
I have just joined this group, and wish to introduce myself. I am Paula
Weiss, >from New York, and have just found out that my GGM Rebekka PONITZ
SEGALOWITZ (b.1859) emigrated to the US in 1892 >from Grodno with three children.
Her husband, Max Moses SEGALOWITZ had emigrated 3 years prior to that. I have
the names of her parents, Hyman and Hilda she called them in 1935...but
that's all I have to go on as far as the family in Grodno.

I see that the LDS films available for Grodno are mainly church records. I
haven't been able to find them in the JewishGen databases...where would you
suggest I look to try to trace them?
Thank you for any help you can give to start me on this journey!

success story in riga #lithuania

Eilat Gordin Levitan

I would like to thank the many people who gave me suggestions about
how to locate my relative >from the Gordin family. Lucky enough, we
asked our hotel staff at the vecriga hotel ( vecriga@vecriga.lv) for
help. During dinner the manager of the hotel restaurant, a man named
Yuris checked the local phonebook for our relative but didn't find
anyone under the address that we had. There were about 30 Gordins in
all of Riga, which made it a very daunting task to find our relative.
Since the archives were closed for the weekend he immediately
contacted an agency on our behalf and before we even finished our meal
Yuris returned and informed us of the name of our relative, his
address, and the telephone number of his neighbor, whom he called. Our
relative happened to be away >from home for the weekend and we were
scheduled to leave Riga on Monday at 12:00. We found his apartment on
Sunday and left a letter with his kind neighbor who identified our
relative in some pictures that we had brought and we left a letter
with this neighbor explaining our connection to the relative and
providing him with our contact information. To our surprise the
neighbor even told us that the relative has a brother in San
Francisco! As the next morning approached and we were packing to leave
Riga we assumed that we wouldn't be able to get in touch with our
relative. However, at 10:00am we got a message stating that he was
meeting us in an hour at our hotel. Our relative told us about cousins
who immigrated to Israel and we immediately called them and found out
that they have been visiting our grandfather's grave in Tel Aviv for
many years and have left several notes looking for us and providing us
with their contact information.
