Annie >from Spain writes: "Looking for the birth of Mark MARKS born c 1792
Mark MARKS is listed on the 1841 census living at 93 Blackman St,
Southwark / Sub-registration district: Borough Road / Civil parish: St
George The Martyr working as a Calver & Gilder

He was living with his wife Elizabeth WALTHAM and children:
Ann 15 years, Frederick 14 years, Henry 20 years born 24/5/1820 Newington,
London. Mark MARKS married Elizabeth WALTHAM in the parish St Martins in the
Fields 25th December 1813 and died 10th April 1849 at home 93, Blackman
St, Southwark. They did have another son called Charles Marks born c1818
Newington who is not listed on the 1841 census"

Remember Anne, that the 1841 census rounded many, many birth dates!

Here is the wedding of Elizabeth WALTHAM and Mark MARKS:
25 Dec 1813 Saint Martin In The Fields, Westminster, London, England
Have you checked that?

Here is their son Frederick with his widowed mother in the 1851 census
Name: Fredk Jas MARKS; Age: 23 Estimated birth year: abt 1828
Relation: Head; Mother's name: Elizh
Male Where born: London, Civil parish: Southwark St George; County Surrey
Occupation: Gilder, so he takes after his father.
Elizabeth - aged 60 - was born in Clerkenwell, hence born ca 1791.

In the 1861 we see him married, born in Southwark and still a gilder.

There are so many Christian MARKS and Mark MARKS in England that unless there
is *real* evidence that Mark was Jewish, it may be just a myth!

Looking at the 1851 census, there are very few foreign-born MARKS who could be
linked to our early Mark MARKS. However there are 2,869 MARKS born in England,
Wales, Scotland and Ireland!

There are quite a few very early MARKS families in the West country and in
Bedfordshire there are some *German* Merk/MARK families in the 1700s. Picture
framing and gilding was quite a common occupation for German immigrants - so
perhaps that is a link? These families were Christian.

Dear Christine,

You wrote:

Only in case the person you are looking for was born 120 years ago, you can
go to the following service and ask for military documents:
Service Historique de l'Armee de Terre
Chateau de Vincennes
Vincennes

You have to go there in person and only the day after you'll get the file.
Yes, it takes them 24 hours to bring the file.
In order to be informed about the hours they are working, call them at:
01-4193- 3551.

They gave me the "Enrollment File" of my grandfather, that contains many
details of genealogical value. This document was produced at the moment the
soldier enrolled and continued to be updated till he was released >from the
army. The soldier never saw that document.

Good luck!

KROPMAN family #general

Margaret Fullarton and David Mark <fullmark@...>

Hello everyone
I am hoping you can give me some pointers re where to next. I have made little
progress in tracking most of my husband's antecedents except the KROPMAN family of
Akmene Lithuania.

It would appear that all the Kropmans started in Akmene (Jewishgen database has
them mostly in Akmene) then they branch out to various towns in the area and some
end up in Latvia and Estonia as well as Belarus and >from there to England, the US
and Russia. Is there anyway I can find out where they began and when they arrived
in Akmene? There are a number of family trees with Kropmans in them and it is a
fairly uncommon name as well as being of standard spelling without any variations
so the trees contain the same people who were in Akmene in 1845. All I have to do
is establish the links to us.

Now if only I could find the Toffs and Crafts I would be a happy woman!
Thankyou in advance.
