Searching families of ZIWJAN and SCHERMAN #general

Zvi Harzion

Dear all,
I am new to this SIG and would like your assistance with looking
for any information regarding the family of ZIWJAN (various
spelling are possible: ZIWJAN, CHIVIAN ,TZIWJAN ,
CIVJAN,TSIVIAN , etc.) >from Dvinsk ( also called Dinaburg
and Daugavpils) and Rezekne or any other place in Latvia. My
great grandfather Hirsh ZIWJAN lived in Dvinsk. His son (our
grandfather) Moshe ZIWJAN was born maybe sometimes
between 1860-1883 ,lived at Dvinsk and then letter at Rezekne
and died between 1920 and 1934. My grandfather Moshe
ZIWJAN married Sheina-Dweira SCHERMAN (born 1883 in
Dinaburg). They had few children:
Hana (b.1903 in Dvinsk),
Hirsch (born 1904 in Dvinsk) was watchmaker in Rezekne ,
Gensia or Genia (born November 12 1906 in Dvinsk) ,
Gesa (b. 1913 in Rezekne)
Riva-Rebecca ,our mother (b. 1914 in Rezekne) .

Our mother immigrate to Israel around 1934 and lost contact
with her family due to the holocaust .All our mother's sibling
lived at Rezekne 1941.I can't rule out any connection of our
ZIWJAN clan to places such as Griva ,Krustpils, Viski, Preili
,Riga, Glazmanka (Gustini) ,Kraslava, Ventspils ,and Bauska.
There are few families with this surname who lived at Lithuania,
Estonia and Belarus. For part of them we found direct
connection to their ancestors >from Latvia.

One of the is assumptions we are trying to verify is whether
Moshe Ziwjan is actually Moshe FIATEL-HAIM ( b. 1867).
Moshe FIATEL, Perez ZIWJAN (b. 1865 ) , and Hona
ZIWJAN (b. 1863 ) are siblings. All grandsons of Simon
ZIWJAN (b.1821)and all born in Dvinsk. The only information
about them, coming >from a testimony given to YadVashemis
related with Zila Kodisch nee ZIVIAN (b. 1881/2) which
might be thedaughter of Hona Ziwjan .

Another assumption we are trying to verify is whether Motel
ZIWJAN (son of Hirsch) was Moshe Ziwjan's brother.
Motel ZIWJAN was born around 1875 and lived in Ventpils.

Researching: ZIWJAN >from any place in Latvia especially
from Dvinsk ,Belarus and Lithuania .
SCHERMAN >from Dvinsk, Zarasi, Vidzi and Novo-Alexsandrovsk.
Also researching MARON and STEIN.

Any information will be highly appreciated

Dr. Zvi Harzion / Israel

Confidentiality #general

Richard Gilbert

I have also been following the comments made about confidentiality. I agree
that when publishing family trees containing details of living relatives the
details should be kept to a bare minimum. However, I agree with Sue Fifer
that if you know where to look, it's not too difficult to find out
information about living relatives. After all, isn't that why we do what we
do? It was because of the information available over the web that I was
able to close a circle which had been broken for 103 year when I made
contact with my second cousin once removed last September. That was the
first contact between our two branches of the family, neither of whom knew
the other existed. Imagine the joy that flowed >from that when his first
cousin who lives in San Francisco came to our house for Shabbat dinner last
September as she was passing through London to get to France. It truly was
a memorable occasion.

Searching for information on NASTUK #romania

Karen Cole <karen@...>

Hello, this is my first posting to ROM-SIG

I am trying to find information on my grandfather John NASTUK and his
brother Fredrick NASTUK. Obviously these names have been anglicized. My
grandfather was born in Bessarabia around 1893, I believe his brother was
one or 2 years old than him. They arrived in Canada around 1910 though I
can find no records to support this. They left parents and I think 1 brother
behind in Bessarabia. In 1920 my grandfather married a Canadian woman and
on his marriage certificate it lists his parents as John NASTUK and Marie
URHUK. His brother married in 1921 and his marriage certificate lists his
parents as John NASTUK and Marie WISCEK. The names are handwritten so it
is difficult to make out the spelling of Marie's last name.

I have not been able to find any information regarding his arrival in Canada
or his departure or any of his history >from Bessarabia. I would be grateful
for any help that I could get.

Thank-you in advance.

Nordell, Larry <lnordell@...>

With regard to Richard Gilbert's search for records of the UMBA, I recall being
told years ago by a member of my grandfather's lodge that when they disbanded
all the records went to the NY State Insurance Commissioner. It might
be worth an inquiry to that office.

Good luck, and please keep us informed.

Searching: NY City Death Records 1920-1930 #general

Lynda Schnier <lschnier@...>

I am looking for the death records of my great-grandparents who lived
in Brooklyn, NY. They were listed in the 1920 NY census as Aaron and
Esther Schnayer ages 58 and 59. Other relatives were found in vital
records under the following spellings: Schnaier, Schnair, Schnayer,
Schneir, Schneier, Schnier and Shnayer. I believe they both died by
1930. I have searched the Italian Genealogical Group for them under
those various spellings. Are there any other online sources where I
can search for New York City death records?

It took a few hours, even for an uncommon surname.

It's not just identity theft.

Even if "mad/bad people", or life insurance companies, etc., knew
about Ancestry etc., and were likely to be persevering enough to do
the work, I see no reason to make it easier for them by making
extended lineage-linked trees about living people easily available.
