Re: chat about a "strange addresss in Wurzburg" #germany

"Robert Winter thinks that there were buildings with two entrances and
this probably indicated which entrance it was. In some addresses it
is written "a.o." after the number. He thinks a.o. stands for' ab ovo'
- >from the very beginning or 'ausserordentlich' - exceptional."
In my opinion we can exclude the latin "ab ovo". And "auerordentlich"
doesn't make sense in my opinion."

My guess is that ao stands for 'auch oben' - also above; indicating that
the person occupied two floors.

Memorial Project by a School - "something in lieu of "Stolpersteine" #germany

Gunther Steinberg <gunste24@...>

I was surprised to receive a letter >from my mother's home town,
Aschersleben, >from a young man of 15 who said his class was doing a
project on the Jewish families that had lived there and had left.

Writing in very good English, he asked for specific information about
my grandfather, his brother and his descendents. He had found my name
and address >from the page of memory for my maternal grandfather at
Yad Vashem. - He had been assigned my grandfather's name and wanted
information what happened to him, his siblings and his family.

Having visited the town, I was able to send him a photo of my
grandfather's bank building taken in 1893 and one I took 100 years
later, as well as all the information and photos he needed to
complete his project. I look forward to receiving a copy of his
completed project, which he labeled as something in lieu of "Stolpersteine".
I thought it a most interesting effort of the school in such a small town.

JGSCV Founding Member Werner Frank Awarded Prize for Book: The Curse of Gurs: Way Station to Auschwitz #germany

Jan Meisels Allen

It is with great pride that I inform the Ger-SIG subscribers that JGSCV founding member
Werner Frank who is also one of the founding members of GerSIG has been awarded
the Landespreis award a Regional/State Prize [Germany] for home research. His book
"The Curse of Gurs: Way Station to Auschwitz" was awarded second place.

Werner traces the fate of Baden Jews in the Nazi era. His research found he had 700
members of his family out of the 6500 imprisoned in the camp.

The jury observed that his book resulted in remarkable and extensive research
that encompassed Frank's widespread family. Werner donated the 1300 Euro award
for the further study of Jewish history.

A short video [less than 4 minutes] about the award and Werner is available for
viewing at:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N76AbbYc6Mk

The video is in German and there is no English translation available.

JGSCV had the privilege of having Werner talk about his book in 2011
and it was an excellent and moving presentation.

DNA to prove parentage #dna

David Lewin wrote: I am in correspondence with a woman born 1953, who
suspects that her mother did not give birth to her, and is asking for help
to find her birth parents.

David - as you rightly point out, in the first instance your correspondent
needs to clinically prove that she is not her registered mother's daughter.
The simple process would be for both parties to have an mtDNA test - and if
they were significantly different then that would prove the first part of
her case. However, clearly this is not a simple question of each party
agreeing to and then having the appropriate definitive test!

I would suggest that before any thought of seeking a DNA solution or 'going
to law' are attempted, the issues need to be explored via a reputable
specialist agency, such as the UK agency After Adoption
(http://www.afteradoption.org.uk/), which provides adoption support and
family finding services and will be familiar with such cases.
